We have a fantastic opportunity to join a cohesive, dynamic and friendly Infection team in North London. Applications are invited for a 12 month Junior Clinical Fellow post in Microbiology / Infection at Barnet & Chase Farm Hospitals. The posts would be suited to applicants with some past experience in Microbiology, Virology or Infectious Diseases.

The successful candidate would form part of a team with 4 Consultant Microbiologists who provide the Infection services to Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals and the surrounding community. Roles within this would include the provision of clinical advice, daily intensive care ward rounds, Microbiology and Virology laboratory result oversight and authorisation.

Contribution to Antimicrobial Stewardship ward rounds, Diabetic Foot, Orthopaedic multi-disciplinary teams and outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy (OPAT) would be considered depending on experience. The role would also work with the Infection Control nurses and Clinical Practice Educators.

The laboratory service is part of Health Services Laboratories (HSL), and is situated off site at the HSL Halo building. There is close working and collaboration with the laboratory team, with communication predominantly maintained remotely.

Applicants must be fully registered with the GMC. The post is ideally suited to applicants with an interest in microbiology, virology or infectious diseases.
  • The appointee will be expected, under the supervision of appropriate senior members of staff, to become familiar with the organisation of the department, to learn at first hand the examination and investigation of specimens submitted to the laboratory, to interact closely with laboratory staff, to interpret the test results and to authorise final reports.
  • There are daily clinical meetings to discuss ongoing clinical cases.
  • The appointee will liaise with clinical teams about patients, attend multidisciplinary ward rounds and visit wards for clinical consults.
  • He/she will take active part in infection and outbreak control issues and liaise with infection prevention and control teams regularly.
  • Other duties and opportunities will depend on the interests and abilities of the individual.
  • Present microbiology cases every 4-6 months at weekly Medical Grand Round
