Swansea Bay University Health Board is offering an opportunity for a 0.8 wte Band 6 Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join a well-established Community Learning Disability Team. The service is regional, and this post will be based in the Cardiff and Vale Team.You will work with adults with learning disabilities who have a range of highly complex communication needs and/or eating, drinking, or swallowing difficulties. Post basic dysphagia competencies are essential for this post. You will be expected to deliver a service into various settings including people’s homes across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan.
We are a friendly, proactive, and supportive multi-disciplinary team offering opportunities to influence and develop new and innovative projects.
We welcome applications from candidates with the pre-requisite skills at a band 6 specialist level as well as from those at band 5 who aspire to develop their knowledge and skills. Under Annex 21, we are offering the opportunity to complete a dedicated competency framework including dysphagia competencies, with access to regular supervision, focused CPD activities and a clear pathway for completion of your training.
Main duties of the job
You will be supported by the Clinical Lead Speech and Language Therapist and the other SLTs and Communication Development Officers in the team. You will have regular opportunities to collaborate with other SLTs across the Swansea Bay Adult Learning Disabilities service as well as working alongside S< colleagues in paediatrics and adult acute services.A key focus for the postholder will be the continuing development and maintenance of the Inclusive Communication Initiative for which the department has a comprehensive training package and support system. There will be a strong emphasis on person-centered planning and co- production as you deliver the service.
An established supervision and support network is in place across the SLT team and there is a commitment within the team to provide student placements. The ability to speak Welsh is desirable, but not essential. Visits and contact with the Clinical Lead SLTs to discuss the role and understand the service are encouraged and very welcome whenever possible.

Qualifications & Training
Essential criteria- Recognised SLT degree or equivalent
- Registered member of RCSLT and HCPC
- Completion of postgraduate specialist courses - Dysphagia
- Relevant postgrad courses
- CEN member
Experience
Essential criteria- Assessment and management of adults with communication and swallowing difficulties
- Support and mentor less experienced SLT's, students and assistants
- Use and interpretation of assessments relevant for specialist caseload
- Experience and knowledge of use of AAC
- Planning and delivery of clinical audit
- Experience and implementation of a range of specialist treatment options for individuals and groups
- Training or teaching of SLTS, other professionals, medical staff and assistants
- Ability to plan, prioritise and manage specialist caseload without direct supervision
- Working within an MDT
Knowledge and Skills
Essential criteria- Specialist knowledge underpinned by current evidence-based practice
- Accurate administration and analysis of assessments leading to differential diagnosis
- Good verbal and written skills to share complex and sensitive information
- Able to work unsupervised and independently as an active member of MDT negotiating case management
- Demonstrates understanding of wider public service policies
- Implementation of clinical governance/audits/research within relevant specialism
- Ability to use Microsoft packages including virtual platforms, spreadsheets etc
- Experience of conflict resolution
- Ability to speak Welsh
