We are looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic, highly motivated & resilient midwife who possess excellent leadership, communication and organisational skills. The successful applicant will be able to manage, lead and motivate a multidisciplinary team whilst demonstrating high levels of professionalism at all times, acting as an exemplary role model with enhanced levels of clinical knowledge and expertise.
  • Lead the 24 hour provision of high quality women centred care for intrapartum services.
  • Act as an expert resource and role model for the team within their service to support them in the delivery of effective care.
  • Be responsible for ensuring a good environment in which all women and families receive a high standard of care which is compassionate and takes account of their individual needs and wishes.
  • Demonstrate clinical leadership in the management of both low and high risk complex maternity care.
  • Identify and facilitate strategies for service improvement, develop initiatives and organisational change, contributing to the clinical governance and risk management agenda by ensuring best practice is evident.
  • Implement and follow HR policies regarding workforce management.
  • Be responsible for ensuring safe deployment of resources to meet and comply with professional midwifery standards, governance, quality and patient safety within the budget set

Take overall responsibility for the management of Labour Suite, Triage and Day Assessment unit. Providing guidance as a role model to others and using their expertise to make judgements and support the rest of the team, including other areas of the service such as the antenatal and postnatal wards and community.

An active role supporting QRS agenda and implementation of the maternity improvement plan.

The post holder will have line management responsibilities and will be part of a wider team of matrons.

  • Assist the Director of Midwifery, Heads of Midwifery in providing professional leadership, management and advice within the Maternity service and to take professional responsibility for the designated clinical areas and services, ensuring that all teams work collaboratively to deliver integrated care.
  • Ensure midwifery workforce complies with Nursing and Midwifery Council Rules and Standards and local Health roster compliance.
  • Ensure mechanisms in place to promote choice and personalised care.
  • Continually monitor, evaluate and analyse the effectiveness of midwifery services.
  • To actively contribute to the strategic development of maternity services to meet both the present and future provisions in line with both Trust and national recommendations.
  • To provide professional advice to patient, carers and colleagues.
  • To contribute to the promotion and maintenance of clinical benchmarking, ensuring sharing and development of best practice.
  • Ensure midwives know how to access support of the Professional Midwifery Advocates, counsellor or any member of the leadership team.
  • Promote a culture of working and integration of standards across the two sites.
  • Promote high standards of infection control compliance.
  • To assist the Head of Midwifery in the development of policies/procedures in performance, risk management, recruitment and retention of health and safety.
  • The post holder will deputise for the Deputy or Head of Midwifery as necessary and support other areas if required.
  • To have continuing responsibility for effective professional, clinical leadership and management of the intrapartum care settings, acting as a role model.
  • Ensure midwives are supported in developing strong leadership skills, delivering on their core functions in specialist roles, as team leaders; coordinators and managers. Support band 7 midwives and specialist midwives to ensure they are developed to undertake management and leadership responsibilities to enable the effective running of their clinical areas.
  • Be responsible for the direct line management of Band 7 coordinators and ward manager.
  • To empower staff to create an environment, which is challenging, stimulating and supportive to individuals, promoting life-long learning in the improvement of patient care.
  • To be visible and accessible to staff and users.
  • To ensure the development, implementation and regular review of protocols/guidelines, in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
  • To be a change agent to promote innovation and development to ensure best practice.
  • Support managers to ensure all areas are compliant with Trust and local training standards.
  • To develop managerial and professional partnerships with relevant organisations.
  • To work in partnership with the University and Midwifery Educationalists to ensure that clinical practice reflects the needs of the students.
  • Act as a role model through the provision of effective professional leadership and demonstration of competent and accountable midwifery practice.
  • An on-call commitment will be required in support the safe running of the maternity service.
