Health & Safety Officer - North
We are looking for a Health & Safety Officer to join our team at Wincanton based in the Northwest. You will report directly into the Health & Safety manager and provide critical, hands-on support to the local operations teams within the Public, Industrial & Defence sector.
Successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain security clearance prior to commencing employment, this includes providing 5 years of UK residence and employment/education history.

- Play a key role in supporting the delivery of the Health, Safety and Environmental strategies in accordance with Wincanton’s internal procedures
- Ensure all standards meet legislation and advise on and share best practice
- Ensure all sites achieve or surpass the targets set by Wincanton, driving standards from the outset to ensure accidents, incidents and lost time injuries are avoided
- Drive a positive and proactive safety culture throughout all levels of the team to promote operational excellence in safety behaviours
- Fully support internal and external audit processes inclusive of ISO certifications
- Co-ordination of all site Health, Safety and Environmental activities including committees, training and communications to ensure sites remain compliant
- Develop appropriate HSE knowledge and expertise within the team
- Undertake risk assessments as required and ensure that existing risk assessments are reviewed & linked to the relevant safe systems of work
- Lead accident investigation and reporting ensuring accurate root causes are identified with adequate corrective actions implemented to prevent reoccurrence
- Ensure that all hazards, near misses, accidents and incidents are recorded correctly and where necessary, escalated within a timely manner using the company safety database system
- Ensure that all contractors working on sites are “approved”, have been vetted and have submitted the correct up to date documentation
- Be pro-active in decision making based on analysis, experience, judgement and intuition but recognise when to escalate
- Support the creation and maintenance of HSE related plans across sites utilising the Group documents and strategies
- Seek Continuous Improvement on all aspects regarding HSE across the contract Proactively lead the Stock and Systems team to achieve planned targets and deadlines, objectively measuring performance providing regular reviews, feedback and coaching within a successful “can do” culture
- Currently holds or working towards a relevant Health and Safety qualification such as NEBOSH
- Experience of HSE in an operational area, preferably in a warehousing operation
- Proactive, effective, and motivated team player who can demonstrate a strong capability of engaging with the workforce and be able to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing
- Remains calm and works well under pressure in tight deadline situations, displaying exceptional organisational skills
- Must possess strong Microsoft Office skills
- Experience of working to ISO standards would be of benefit
- Must be able to demonstrate a keen interest in continually improving our Health, Safety and Environment performance
- Must hold a current valid UK driving license and be willing to travel as there may be a requirement to support or cover other operations
