The Clinical Engineering Service is looking for an individual to join our team to complement our existing staff groups.

Do you have an interest in engineering technology, looking to learn how medical health science technology promote better health for all and be part of an advanced engineering support service within our local NHS Trusts?

You will be based at Torbay Hospital, working alongside various sections within the service. You main initial role will be to support the front-line service provide by the Medical Mechanical Engineering and Devices Library, part of the Medical Electronics Section.

The Devices Library, is an internal loan service to Torbay Hospital for key items of medical equipment used in all wards & most departments. We will be expecting you to visit health care sites in Devon, to collect and return devices, undertake simple and straight forward repairs.

Over the next few years, there is an opportunity to develop technical competencies. This may lead onto fully funded engineering training pogroms at local colleagues [L3/L4/HNC] and University [Level 6/Bsc/Beng].

You will be required to travel to other centres in the South Devon area in the course of their work and will be required to hold a full driver’s licence.

Main duties of the job
  • The post holder to undertake the delivery and retrieval of medical devices and equipment supporting the Clinical Engineering Services for the Medical Electronics section.
  • The post holder will perform straight forward repairs, scheduled preventative and corrective maintenance, calibration, safety, and acceptance testing on a wide range of medical devices under close supervision. These activities may be carried out at another site in the Devon Area under close supervision from a more experienced technician.
  • Will give guidance and training to colleagues & junior staff in the procedures to undertake function checks, clean and check loan status of medical devices held by the Medical Electronics Section.

Working for our organisation

The Clinical Engineering Service provides a comprehensive management & technical support service for a broad spectrum of medical devices used throughout the health, care, and social community. We are currently developing networks with scientific and laboratory services across Devon with our new Scientific, Laboratory Equipment Support section.

Medical Devices Library functions as a loan service for key medical devices commonly used throughout the acute Trust. This has enabled the organisation to promote & implement a strong standardisation theme for medical devices held as library stock, enabling efficiencies in consumable costs, reduced opportunities for User error and less diversity requiring technical support, repair & maintenance.

Medical Electronics being the largest section in CES (providing repair, routine schedule service maintenance, troubleshooting, technical advice, and commissioning & device disposal (‘cradle to grave’). Medical Electronics implements and manages Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) Safety Notices and Manufacturer product recall/updates.

Within this section there are three teams providing specialist support for: Critical Care areas (Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit & High Dependency) and Operating Theatre Support (all Operating Theatres and Recovery areas).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will be required to undertake the collection, delivery and retrieval of all medical devices and equipment supporting the services provided by the Clinical Engineering Service:

  • Loaned equipment from the Medical Devices Library Section
  • Medical Devices and other equipment at location the organisation provides health services too throughout Devon, this will include driving trust vehicles.
  • The post holder will perform straight forward repairs, scheduled preventative and corrective maintenance, calibration, safety, and acceptance testing on a wide range of medical devices under close supervision from a more experienced technician.
  • The post holder will attend training courses relevant to the services being delivered and to maintain competency levels appropriate for the work undertaken.
  • Assist other members of the service in their duties to ensure smooth running of the medical devices library loan service thereby providing an optimal service to its Users/Customers
  • Provision of straight forward advice and support to clinical staff, management and external organisations for ward based medical devices on hire or rental of such equipment.
  • Works with agreed procedures, processes, protocols, and part of the self-management team model, is responsible for own actions.
  • Work within guidelines or boundary of procedures, policy, best practice, legislations, or regulations
  • As a member of the CES to be a role model in terms of acceptable behaviour & moral standards
  • Work with Staff of the Trust to ensure compliance to statutory duty and board national guidelines.
  • As a member of the service contribute to the reviews of service policies, procedures & guidelines.
