Assistant Librarian
Dragon School is recruiting an Assistant Librarian to work three days a week in our vibrant and busy library at the heart of the school. The library is used by teachers for English classes during the school day, and everyone in the school is welcome to use the library in their free time.
The required hours are:
Tuesday 8.00 – 16.30
Wednesday 8.00 - 16.30
Thursday 8.00 – 16.30
This includes a 30-minute lunchbreak, with lunch provided on site. (Working days could be flexible for the right candidate but working pattern to be over three full days.)
This is a term-time only position. Please note that leave cannot be taken while term is in session.
Duties and Responsibilities
The purpose of this role is to assist the Librarian with the day-to-day running of the library, sometimes working alone (once full training has been given), and sometimes alongside the Librarian. The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Undertaking library duties on a regular basis, e.g. staffing the issue desk; shelving, tidying and mending books; processing new books; stocktaking.
- Presenting information to classes, for example library inductions and orientation, reading book extracts, leading simple games and activities (these would be planned collaboratively with the Librarian).
- Helping the children in English lessons to find books, giving recommendations and encouraging children in their reading development.
- Creating displays of books around topical themes, with the support of the Librarian as needed.
- Maintaining a calm, purposeful, learning environment in the library (alongside a teacher during lessons).
- Assisting children with minor problems and queries, liaising with colleagues where appropriate.
- Building good relationships with the children and encouraging them to make the best use of the library’s resources.
- Assisting with occasional events, e.g. visiting authors. Some flexibility would be desirable (with adequate notice and time off in lieu given).
- Other ad hoc duties and projects as planned collaboratively with the Librarian, to support and enhance the library’s development. Creativity and autonomy are welcome and encouraged!
At Dragon School, we know that diversity promotes creativity and innovation. We are committed to equity of opportunity and to being a fair and inclusive employer. We therefore particularly encourage applications from underrepresented groups.
