Job overview

We are seeking a clinical psychologist to cover maternity leave for a colleague established in this role. The post holder will work across the lifespan in Diabetes care and be embedded in the MDT for children, young people (0.4 wte) and adults (0.2 wte). You will be working in two established out-patient diabetes multi-disciplinary services; the paediatric and young persons’ team and the adult diabetes team

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work across the life span (children & young people with diabetes 0.4 WTE and adults with diabetes 0.2 WTE) and, with psychological therapist colleagues, provide a clinical psychology service in the diabetes multidisciplinary teams.

Providing Psychological assessment and intervention for CYP and adults who have Diabetes.

Working within the MDT, mainly in Stoke Mandeville Hospital, taking the lead on Psychological care and supporting and consulting with the MDT to enhance the psychological experience of each patient.

Ensuring annual psychological assessment for all CYPs as required for Best Practice Tariff

Alongside your Clinical psychology colleague providing the CYP service for Diabetes in Wycombe Hospital, developing and leading psychological groups and also contributing to general Diabetes patient education groups

Running the psychological therapy service to adults with Diabetes by screening all referrals and allocating and supervising those referrals that are seen by the local Talking Therapies CBT therapist working in Diabetes

Risk assessment & liaison with outside mental Health agencies and social care as necessary to ensure safety of the CYP and Adults in your care

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

Essential criteria
  • Post-graduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996 and those who trained abroad) as accredited by the BPS, or with a statement of equivalence from the BPS
  • Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the British Psychological Society and HCPC
  • Is HCPC registered as a Practitioner Psychologist
Desirable criteria
  • Post-doctoral training (e.g. in a therapeutic model)
  • Leadership qualification / evidence of training in leadership
  • Formal training in supervision of other psychologists

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Supervised experience of working with a wide variety of client groups across the lifespan and presenting with a wide range of clinical severity across a wide range of care settings (e.g. outpatient, inpatient, community and residential care settings)
  • Experience of working with people with long term health conditions
  • Experience of individual psychological interventions with clients with both acute and long term physical health problems
  • Experience of working with children and Young people and their families and carers
  • Experience of liaising with related services which may be required for patient care e.g. IAPT, Psychiatry liaison services, CAMHS
  • Experience of interdisciplinary working in a physical healthcare setting
  • Experience of teaching and training to a variety of professional groups, including nurses
  • Experience of supervising qualified clinical psychologists, trainee clinical psychologists and physical healthcare staff such as doctors, physiotherapists and nurses
  • Experience of leadership
  • Experience of planning and implementing changes in a service, even against resistance
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working effectively in an unstructured and constantly changing environment
  • Experience of managing resources and allocating these strategically to meet the various demands on/needs of the service
  • Experience of leading and conducting research within clinical settings

SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria
  • Skills in assessing people with complex psychological, health and social difficulties
  • Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate orally effectively, especially when under pressure
  • Able to maintain a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
  • Able to identify psychological difficulty in a short time frame and to be able to act appropriately to address the person’s needs
  • Able to provide highly specialist advice regarding patient care
  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional groups.
  • Willing to engage with and learn from peers, other professionals and colleagues in the desire to provide or support the most appropriate interventions
  • Skills in working as part of a team and engaging in organisational innovations.
  • Able to identify priorities for service development, identify resources required and put forward a case to managers
  • Knowledge of legislation in relation to mental health.
  • Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology, including complex multivariate data analysis as practiced within the field of clinical psychology.
  • Has good skills in influencing and networking
  • Able to work independently
  • Enthusiasm for the application of psychological models in an acute hospital setting.

  • Able to travel to travel between Trust sites and to the CAMHS service
