Leweston School, a thriving co-educational day and boarding school nestled in 46 acres of beautiful Dorset parkland just outside Sherborne, is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Careers Advisor to join our pastoral team. Educating just over 600 pupils from 3 months to 18 years, Leweston is renowned for its excellent teaching and commitment to providing an individualised and supportive learning experience where pupils of all abilities are challenged to excel.

The Role:

As our Careers Advisor, you will play a pivotal role in guiding our students as they explore their Post 16 and Post 18 pathways. Working within our supportive pastoral system, you will provide impartial careers education, information, advice, and guidance, ensuring our students have a wide range of opportunities and experiences to make informed decisions about their futures.

You will liaise with Deputy Heads, the Head of Sixth Form, teaching staff, support staff, external agencies, and parents/carers to deliver a high-quality careers programme across the school.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide high-quality, impartial careers guidance to students through 1:1 interviews and small group sessions, empowering them to plan and manage their future pathways.
  • Develop individual transition and action plans for students, prioritising interventions for vulnerable students in Years 8 to 13.
  • Offer comprehensive information, advice, and signposting to specialist agencies on careers, education, employment, and training.
  • Conduct thorough research on career options, pathways, and support organisations to effectively meet students' diverse needs.
  • Develop and deliver engaging small group sessions and larger presentations on all aspects of careers guidance and personal development.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with external organisations, negotiating opportunities for our students.
  • Collaborate with families and carers to ensure a holistic support network for each young person.
  • Provide targeted support and guidance during key academic milestones, including KS4 Options, Post 16 options, subject/parents' evenings, and results days.
  • Utilise and develop IT systems for efficient administrative tasks, including recording interactions and tracking student progress.
  • Prepare statistical returns, reports, and statutory documentation related to the role.
  • Coordinate and manage the destination tracking of all Year 11, 12, and 13 students.
  • Review and develop resources for Careers lessons and create engaging career displays.
  • Support the UCAS application process for our Sixth Form students.
  • Lead the organisation and management of education and career pathway events, such as careers fairs.
  • Contribute to the development of Careers policies, priorities, schemes of work, and resources.
  • Plan and deliver careers education activities as required.
  • Organise and provide training and support for school staff to enhance their delivery of careers programmes.
  • Maintain and update the school's careers library and relevant displays.
  • Stay informed about labour market information, legislation, and professional developments, disseminating this knowledge to the Assistant Headteacher.
  • Actively participate in internal and external school inspections.
  • Evaluate the quality of careers education and guidance provision, providing reports to SLT and Governors.
  • Operate in accordance with all school policies and procedures, upholding the school's ethos and commitment to safeguarding.

Person Specification:

We are looking for an enthusiastic and friendly individual with a genuine passion for the education and development of young people.

Essential:

  • Experience of Business/Commerce
  • Knowledge of UCAS
  • Ability to work effectively with young people of all ages.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a collaborative team member.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with a range of stakeholders.
  • Reliable with excellent time management skills.
  • Flexible and resilient, able to adapt to change and display sound judgement.

Desirable:

  • Educated to degree level.
  • Level 4 Diploma in Career Information and Advice or Level 6 Diploma in Career Guidance and Advice.
  • Strong IT skills.
  • Ability to teach Business Studies and/or Economics.
  • Enthusiastic and energetic, passionate about your subject.

Hours of work: 22.5 hours a week, to be worked over 3 days, term time plus 1 week (to include examination results days), 35 working weeks.
