Band 7 Gastroenterology Specialist nurse - Fixed Term 13.5 hours
( secondment opportunity) NCIC has a 15 minimum hours policy and this post can only be considered by applicants already employed on a 15 contract or more.
The purpose of this role is to join the Gastroenterology team to provide nursing leadership on the delivery and implementation of a new pathway for suitable patients to have a procedure which is alternative to a traditional endoscopy. This role has been specially designed to lead on optimal pathways and timely access to diagnostic procedures and will require the post holder to lead on the pathway as it continues to refine over time.The post holder will be expected to deliver a Nurse led diagnostic service for patients who are referred in for Pillcam investigations, diagnostic investigations. This will include performing procedures and assessments in an outpatient setting and working closely with the gastroenterology clinicians to deliver a new diagnostic service.
The post holder will be responsible for the delivery of a consistent, accessible service offering expert advice, clinical practice and support to people with Gastric Cancer.
Main duties of the job
Clinical- To excel and innovate by practicing as an autonomous clinical practitioner, whilst working as part of the multidisciplinary team, with self-management of own caseload of patients and is the lead specialist for the PillCam diagnostic pathway for the Trust.
- Using advanced verbal and non-verbal communication skills maintain effective and timely communication with patients, carers and multi-professionals to ensure seamless service delivery. Ensuring patients are aware of their situation, planned investigations and treatments. Providing contact details as their key worker and for informational and psychological support
- Provide support, verbal and written information on gastric cancers & benign conditions for newly referred patients and their families, enabling patients to make an informed decision on their treatment
- Perform advanced clinical skills in assessment and/or diagnosis and/or treatments of symptoms including the development of nurse led clinics which may be telephone or virtual.
- Plan and set up the specialist PillCam diagnostic pathway/service, ensuring that the service is robust enough to support patients undergoing complex gastric cancer & benign investigations and treatment & ensuring you act as an advocate for the patient at MDT meetings for subsequent follow up by the post holder and the consultant - see job description for further details.
