An excellent development opportunity has arisen to join the Southport & Ormskirk Theatre Team at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. We are looking to recruit a dynamic and motivated individual to join our highly skilled and dedicated team of Nursing and AHP Staff as a Theatre Education Facilitator.

To lead, support and develop students and staff working in our spacious, fully equipped state of the art theatres on the Whiston and St Helens sites.

Applicants must be committed to providing first class care to all patients, be registered with the NMC or HPC and should have significant theatre experience and be able to demonstrate that you have excellent communicational, training, organisational and leaderships skills.

You must be self-motivated with a commitment to provide quality training to staff and excellent patient care within the peri - operative phase of the patient’s journey. Suitable applicants should have demonstrable theatre and Anaesthetic experience, experience of training and mentoring students and theatre team members of all grades.

The successful candidate will be responsible and accountable for:

The day to day supervision, leadership and development of Apprentices, non-medical students and staff ensuring the delivery of a safe, cost effective clinical care.

Contributing to achieving improvement in services and key performance indicators for the surgical division.

Lead, support and develop staff in relation to Perioperative practice.

Provide support to the Operational Lead for Education and the Theatre Management team in reviewing and evolving the training program for non-medical students, new starters and existing staff.

Facilitate the delivery and record keeping of Mandatory training, competencies and continuing professional development for all theatre staff.

The role involves both clinical and educational responsibilities. Ratio allocated by the Operational Lead for Education. Supporting the Operational Leads in promoting and implementing the principles of the6C’s;

The post holder will provide professional support to students and theatre teams.

Actively participate in clinical/infection prevention audits with the team and develop action plans.

An Enhanced DBS Certificate with the checking of both the Children's and Adults' Barred Lists is required for this post.

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

KEY DUTIES

To facilitate support and develop staff and students within the operating department.

To participate in regular contact with students when on clinical placement and provide necessary support.

To collaborate and work in partnership with clinical colleagues to maximise learning opportunities for staff and students.

To work in partnership with colleagues and other stakeholders to promptly identify and action any student related problem to minimise disruption to the learning environment.

To report to the Theatre Operational Lead for Education, any evidence or doubts regarding the suitability of a clinical area to meet students or staff members learning needs, or address significant development difficulties experienced by an individual.

To work with and on behalf of the Theatre Operational Lead for Education providing support and advice on staff and student educational and development matters.

To establish robust working relationships with all service users and actively encourage and promote joint working in the pursuit of continuous service improvement.

Support the Theatre Operational Lead for Education/Theatre Manager to achieve meeting agreed financial targets.

To adapt and prioritise own workload.

To assist and support the Theatre Operational Lead for Education/Theatre Manager in achieving clinical, operational and corporate objectives.

To ensure training and safe use of medical devices within the Theatre department

To support Trust educational department to provide multi-disciplinary training involving but not limited to Simulation training

To Maintain up to date documentation relating to key trainers within the Theatre Department/Trust

To support the Theatre Operational Lead for Education to ensure that Theatre Department/Trust training targets are achieved and accurate records are kept

CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintain personal, professional knowledge and clinical competencies as required for NMC/HCPC.

In partnership with other stakeholders promote a culture of training, development and evidence based research in the pursuit of clinical excellence.

To assist in developing and evaluating course programmes and clinical placements.

To participate in the facilitation of teaching within the Trust as required.

Lead on medical devices training within theatres and ensure database is established and maintained/updated in partnership with Medical devices coordinator for the Trust.

Participate in regular liaison with colleagues from HEIs and other stakeholders.

To actively participate in selection and recruitment processes staff and students in accordance with national legislation and local policies.

To participate in the induction and provision of orientation programmes for all new members of staff and students. Ensure students attend Trust induction days and mandatory training.

To support staff and students in the completion of peri-operative competencies and associated documentation.

To create and maintain high quality written and electronic records in accordance with data protection and relevant legislation.

To support Theatre Operational Leads in maintaining safe staffing levels within the department

LINE MANAGEMENT/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

To work with the multi-professional theatre education department in the delivery of effective educational programmes for theatre staff and students.

To lead the agenda on education and development issues at departmental/wider trust meetings.

To ensure all records (patients, staff and students) are managed in accordance with good record keeping guidelines.

To participate in the selection and recruitment of staff and students.

To create and maintain high quality written and electronic records in accordance with data protection and relevant legislation.

Support staff awareness and development to ensure emergencies are managed in accordance with hospital policy.

First line delegated management to support achievement of the Care Group and Trust objectives through appraisal process.

Support the Theatre Operational Leads/Manager to reduce inefficiencies and ineffective utilisation of the theatre department.

Support the implementation and regularly review agreed clinical protocols to ensure patient safety and best practice.

Participate and support staff and students in undertaking clinical audit.

To monitor sickness and absence of seconded staff, apprentices and students ensuring compliance with Trust or HEIs policy and maintain accurate record keeping utilising ESR where applicable.

Support both team leader (Appraiser) and the appraisee to complete annual appraisal and periodic review where needed. Support the Theatre Operational Lead for Education and Theatre Operational Manager in ensuring that training and development need identified on a Personal Development Plan and the staff are properly supported by suitably qualified staff to achieve the plan in line with service provision and are met within agreed timescales.

Support staff and non-medical students discipline in all areas of service delivery and where necessary implement and/or participate in Trust or HEIs disciplinary procedures to address incidents of misconduct.

Support and encourage the integration and development of knowledge and skills of staff and non-medical students throughout theatres and aim to develop a greater breadth of competencies enabling service flexibility and provision for the future.

Support Theatre Operational Lead for Education /Manager by participating in various multi-professional internal/external meetings

FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Support the Theatre Operational Manager to achieve meeting financial targets by effective use of resources.

RISK AND GOVERNANCE

To assist in the monitoring of students’ progress by regular review/discussion of progress reports in liaison with HEI partners and other stakeholders.

To identify and monitor suitable clinical areas to provide clinical placements for students.

To facilitate delivery and provision of clinical supervision for colleagues and students in the operating department.

To act as mentor for post registration programmes.

To promote continuing professional development for all staff

Contribute to the improvement of patient care through development of standards and participation in audit and research.

Actively participate in review and development of policies within theatres in partnership with Governance Department and other stakeholders.

To support the development of nursing and operating department practices in theatres, which reflects evidenced-based research e.g. NCEPOD and clinical audit that will improve the quality of patient care.

Support the Theatre Operational Leads/Manager in initiating appropriate actions in response to complaints or comments by patients and/or service users and stakeholders.

Ensure all equipment and working practices within theatres comply with Health & Safety and other statutory requirements.

Participate in monitoring of quality standards in all areas of service provision. Support the theatre teams in initiating appropriate actions in response to Datix reports and resultant action plans.

Support the Operational Leads/Manager to undertake risk assessments to identify potential risks to patients and staff and students, producing and implementing action plans as necessary.

Ensure the Trust /Department meets the requirements of educational audits for partner HEI establishments.

To promote establishment and maintenance of robust links with partner HEIs, outside agencies and other stakeholders.

To promote staff, students and personal responsibility for awareness and compliance with legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures.
