The Cervical Cytology department at Manchester University Foundation Trust is seeking to recruit a Consultant Biomedical Scientist to join our Cervical Cytology team. The department is UKAS accredited and IBMS approved for training.

We currently process approximately 470,000 requests producing approximately 70,000 cervical cytology slides using the Hologic ThinPrep LBC system. We are committed to quality improvement and research activities.

To be shortlisted for this role you will be a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist, hold the Royal College of Pathologists & Institute of Biomedical Science conjoint Advanced Specialist Diploma in Cervical Cytology and NHSCSP Certificate in Cervical Cytology (or equivalent).

You will have extensive post-registration experience in Cytopathology with evidence of competency and able to provide evidence of meeting national standards for screening workload.

We are looking for either full or part-time working and you must be flexible to work within the departmental opening hours of 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday.

Main duties of the job

The successful Consultant BMS candidate will operate as part of the consultant team in cervical cytology, authorising cervical cytology reports, giving clinical management recommendations and participating in cervical cytology mismatch MDT meetings.

The post holder will be a member of the departmental senior management team, bringing clinical expertise and strategic direction to the field of cervical cytology. This will involve expanding and developing best practice, implementing clinical governance and delivering improved outcomes for the Cervical Screening Programme.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RCPath & IBMS conjoint Advanced Specialist Diploma in Cervical Cytology
  • Fellowship IBMS
  • NHSCSP Certificate in Cervical Cytology
  • Evidence of participation in a CPD scheme
Desirable criteria
  • HSD in cytology or equivalent
  • Masters degree

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Comprehensive and in depth knowledge of the principles and practice of the NHSCSP at lab, local, regional and national level
  • Understanding of medical terminology pertinent to the NHSCSP
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience of the management of quality within the cytology lab and monitoring of performance against national standards
  • Understanding of colposcopy and patient management issues
  • Knowledge of the clinical governance requirements of the NHSCSP
  • At least 10 years post registration experience in cytology at senior level
  • At least 10 years experience of teaching within the NHSCSP
  • Expereince of undertaking multidisciplinary clinical audit
  • Experience of cytology failsafe operation and patient management requirements

  • Has an appreciation of strategies for pathology and NHSCSP
  • Possess a portfolio which demonstrates career long learning, experience and formal education
