An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the well established and dynamic Occupational Therapy Team at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a Rotational Occupational Therapist.

Rotations can include, but are not limited to, Community Therapy, Intermediate Care, Paediatrics, Learning Disabilities, Orthopaedics and Acute therapies.

Some rotations are Monday to Sunday and some rotations will require access to a vehicle with appropriate business insurance.

On each rotation the post holder will be supported by passionate and experienced team members who will help guide and support your individual learning needs and ensure that the best standards of care are provided.

You must be a registered Occupational Therapist but we will consider students in their final year.

Main duties of the job
  • To provide a high standard occupational therapy services to patients within the rotation.
  • To act as a source of knowledge on the management of current caseloads and provide an advisory service to patients, relatives, other healthcare professionals and students.
  • To take a role in the assessment and treatment of patients within the rotation, to provide occupational therapy treatment indicated and to maintain records as an autonomous practitioner.
  • To hold responsibility for own case load and be responsible for a defined area of the service or a particular patient type, working with direct supervision.
  • To assist teams in planning, co-ordination, delivering and evaluating the therapy services provided within the rotation.
  • To participate in the education and training of occupational therapists, other health professionals and OT students in the management of OT conditions as appropriate in the respective rotation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own work including the management of patients in your care.
  • To ensure high standards of clinical care for the patients under your management, and support therapy assistants to do likewise.
  • Post holders are required to work independently, guided by defined clinical & professional guidelines. Access to a more senior member therapist is available when necessary.
  • To interpret and analyse clinical and non-clinical facts to form accurate diagnosis and prognosis in a wide range of conditions, to recommend the best course of intervention, and to develop comprehensive treatment and discharge plans.
  • To take delegated responsibility from a senior therapist for managing patients with particular conditions and be responsible for providing generic and occupational therapy assessments and treatment plans for patients within the rotation.
  • Formulate and deliver an individual occupational therapy treatment programme based on a sound knowledge of evidence based practice and treatment options using clinical assessment, reasoning skills and knowledge of treatment skills e.g. graded occupational therapy techniques, patient education, exercises, and other alternative options.
  • To accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients, and to organise this effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and use of time.
  • To demonstrate appropriately developed knowledge for the co-ordination of a comprehensive OT plan relevant to the individual being treated.
  • To assist the team in developing policy and procedures within therapy.
  • To provide spontaneous and planned advice, teaching and instruction to relatives, carers and other professionals, to promote understanding of the aims of occupational therapy and to ensure a consistent approach to patient care.
  • To contribute to the provision of advice, teaching and training to other members of the MDT regarding the management of patients within the rotational post you may be working in.
  • To assess capacity, gain valid consent and have the ability to work within a legal framework with patients who lack consent to treatment.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Diploma/Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • HCPC Registration
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of relevant post graduate courses/CPD
  • Member of appropriate professional body

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Pre or Post Graduate Experience of working in a variety of settings
  • Experience of treating patients with a variety of conditions
  • Experience of applying the OT process with a range of patients
  • Experience of managing a caseload (under supervision).
  • NHS experience (placement/voluntary/employment).
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working as an autonomous practitioner

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to utilise a range of Occupational therapy interventions
  • Effective inter-personal skills
  • Effective written, verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
  • Able to prioritise and manage own caseload.
  • Able to work single handed and as part of an MDT.
  • Able to maintain judgement under pressure.
  • Able to reflect and critically appraise own performance and utilise self-directed learning.
Desirable criteria
  • Presentation skills.
  • Teaching skills.
  • Able to delegate work appropriately to support staff

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of a wide range of medical and surgical conditions.
  • Knowledge of a range of assessment tools
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Therapy management of a variety of conditions.
  • Knowledge of professional ethics and their application in practice.
  • Knowledge of the principle elements of clinical governance
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge quality agenda and its application.
  • Good knowledge of appropriate IT
  • Knowledge of the Healthier Wigan Partnership

  • Clear vision of role
  • Clear interest in this area of practice
  • Able to travel independently between different sites of the Trust
  • Speak English to an appropriate standard relevant to their role, i.e. with confidence and accuracy, using correct sentence structures and vocabulary, and without hesitation
