The NHS Pension Scheme is one of the largest pension schemes in the country, with 1.8 million people contributing. It is a valuable part of the reward package for NHS staff. The Department sets rules and policies to ensure the scheme is sustainable and supports NHS employers to attract and retain their workforces.
NHS pensions policy is a technical and complex area. The postholder will provide deep expertise on personal tax and pensions legislation and apply this in designing pension scheme and workforce policies for the NHS. They will work closely with the NHS Pension Scheme administrator in specifying the technical detail for policies and processes relating to pension benefit calculations to ensure efficient and effective implementation.
The postholder will work with colleagues across government, HM Revenue & Customs and NHS system partners, representing the Department with stakeholders and working at pace to advise ministers and senior officials. They will collaborate with lawyers, actuaries, accountants and technical specialists to assess and respond to changes in tax and regulatory requirements, developing policy options and running consultations on statutory instruments to deliver legislative changes.
