Are you passionate about making a difference to climate change and comfortable working with complex data with an interest in hydrology? If so, we have an opportunity for a hydrologist to join our team in the Cumbria and Lancashire Area. This is an entry level role into the Hydrology Team where you will have the opportunity to develop your skills within a supportive team environment.

We offer an accredited hydrological training programme to help you build your skills and knowledge within the role along with on-the-job training, coaching and mentoring in water resources hydrology. You will develop the skills allowing you help regulate, protect and enhance the water environment through data analysis for effective water resource management.

This will include:
  • contributing to producing the water situation and hydrological monitoring reports.
  • supporting the Team to complete quality assurance of river flow data.
  • Technical assessments into the impact of water abstractions on river flows.

You will work closely with your Hydrology Team members and support the provision of professional advice on hydrological issues to customers and partners. Your work will inform decision making and contribute to protecting and improving the environment.

The team

You will join a friendly and welcoming team of Hydrologists delivering work across Cumbria and Lancashire. You will work in either: Preston (Lutra House), Penrith (Ghyll Mount) or Warrington (Richard Fairclough House).

Our Team provides technical expertise and advice on a range of water resource management projects including the Water Framework Directive, Catchment Abstraction Management Strategies, water resource management plans, drought plans and determining water resources licences.

Experience/skills required

We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual, who has a keen eye for detail and can organise their busy workload. This role will involve being able to analyse, interpret and report on hydrological data for water resources activities in the Cumbria and Lancashire Area. Through experience to date, you will be able to demonstrate some of the following:

  • An understanding of hydrological processes
  • A degree in hydrology/geography or another closely related subject is desirable
  • An understanding of water resources
  • Delivery of work by planning, tracking, gathering and maintaining data/information
  • An understanding and experience of data collection and processing
  • Ability to develop and maintain good relationships with internal and external customers
  • Good interpersonal skills and be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
