Commissioning Engineer (I&C)

Hinkley Point C based, with occasional travels in Bridgwater offices, Aztec West – Bristol and suppliers’ premises may be required.

The Opportunity

As our next Commissioning Engineer, you’ll be working within our Commissioning programme who plays a key role to demonstrate the compliance of the installation with the design, controlling that the plant will be handed over to future operation according to the expected criteria.

As our next Commissioning Engineer, you will be responsible for ensuring the commissioning of the Instrumentation & Control systems for HPC. The commissioning of each system on each platform will be done independently first and then, the test of the compatibility of the equipment will allow to guarantee the future operability of the plant.

What you will be doing…

The I&C systems at HPC are large, novel, and complex, incorporating three different technologies such as SPPA-T2000, all of which are new to the UK nuclear industry, along with dedicated I&C systems. The commissioning of each system on each platform will be done independently first, followed by testing the compatibility of the equipment to guarantee the future operability of the plant. Depending on the contract, your responsibilities will include:

  • Working closely with our systems engineers from other disciplines (electrical, mechanical mainly) to support the commissioning of their equipment which can operate with a dedicated I&C (turbine, diesel, auxiliary boiler, ventilation, chillers and heaters etc)
  • Commissioning equipment or organising the surveillance of the commissioning done by the supplier.
  • Managing instrumentation, which is considered Level 0 (including pumps, valves, tank levels, transmitters, and more complex equipment such as nuclear instrumentation).
  • Handling controllers, which run all field processes through hard-wired signals to the instrumentation.
  • Overseeing Level 2 systems, mainly servers and workstations connected to controllers via plant buses, some of which are TCP-IP based.
  • Focusing on Level 3, which involves data collection and interfacing from Level 2 systems to data historians and remote access to field systems.

To be considered for the role of commissioning engineer, you must thrive in a dynamic, site-based environment and demonstrate flexibility and adaptability. You should be proactive, capable of identifying issues, proposing solutions, and autonomously setting action plans to meet deadlines.

You must be open-minded, comfortable in a multicultural setting, and rigorous in following procedures with a questioning attitude.

Accountability, responsibility, and initiative to meet quality, schedule, and cost targets are crucial. Strong communication and organisational skills are required to build effective networks internally and externally. Additionally, you should foster team development, embrace challenges positively, and possess strong English language skills. In addition to this, we’re also looking for you to hold the below:

  • A degree or HNC qualification in a relevant engineering discipline would be advantageous however, not essential.
  • Extensive experience in the corresponding engineering field and/or commissioning experience.
  • Proven ability to adapt successfully to new environments and large industries, ideally within the nuclear sector
  • Strong understanding of the need for technical and administrative rigour in the nuclear industry
  • Ability to focus and deliver results both independently and as part of a team, with the capacity to multitask across different I&C systems
