Specialist Occupational Therapist for Orthopaedic / Surgical Unit

A new and exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Occupational Therapist to join our dedicated department.

As a band 6 Occupational Therapist you will work within an Occupational Therapy team comprising of three support workers, one junior band 5s and three other band 6 Occupational Therapists under the lead of two experienced band 7 Team Leads. The team work closely with the wider Multi-Disciplinary Team and have an excellent, well-respected working relationship with Consultants, Nurses, Physios, Social Care Team and Case Managers.

Working as a valued member of the wider Multi-Disciplinary Team your role will include assessment and treatment of patients, prevention of de-conditioning, facilitation of timely and effective patient discharge, and on-going referrals to other agencies.

You will also take on the responsibility of supervising band 5s. As the opportunity arises, you will be expected to take on the supervision and education of Occupational Therapy Students on placement.

Main duties of the job

The post holder assists in the development, administration and provision of a specialist Occupational Therapy service; carries a varied caseload of recently discharged patients. Managing complex assessment, with predominantly physical conditions and with regard to the physical, emotional, psychosocial, spiritual and social aspects of their care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Directly responsible for the management of own caseload of patients referred for HOST assessment, rehabilitation and management within the multi-disciplinary team/community.

Assists in the management of the specialist team providing, developing and planning a Occupational Therapy service to patients for this client group.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Diploma/degree in OT by recognised awarding body e.g. Royal College of Occupational therapists.
  • Must satisfy the criteria for full membership of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Further qualifications/study
Desirable criteria
  • An approved Occupational Therapy supervisor for OT/PT degree students

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of the role of Occupational Therapy for people with a wide range of physical dysfunction
  • Able to assess for and fit basic equipment to facilitate safe discharge
  • Previous experience relating to specialist area
  • Experience of working in an acute hospital setting
  • Knowledge of relevant NHS and SS legislation
  • Able to assess for and fit complex equipment and teach patient/carer in the safe use of these
  • Experience with community/mental health conditions
