Job overview

Specialty Doctor

Acute Medicine/Elderly Medicine

This is an exciting time to join Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust which is one of the highest performing NHS Trusts in the UK.

Would you like a job that you enjoy, in a department where people strive to provide excellent quality care?

Think you’ve got what it takes to join us?

The Acute Medicine team is a consultant led, multi-disciplinary team for urgent and ambulatory care. The team runs the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) clinic, which offers fast, efficient ambulatory and ongoing care for patients with acute care needs.

SDEC has a close and excellent working relationship with our local GP’s. Community services and GP’s can access SDEC Clinic directly for advice and support.

This innovative concept puts the patient first, fast tracking assessments and diagnostics, lessening delays and waits and avoiding unnecessary hospital admissions. It is leading the way in ambulatory care. The team includes 6 WTE consultants, a long term locum consultant and 5 Acute Care practitioners who support both the inpatient ward and the SDEC service department.

Main duties of the job
  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.
  • To work flexibly to cover the needs of the Department
  • Assisting with teaching and training of junior staff and medical students
  • To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
  • To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME).

Working for our organisation

HDFT is a “double excellent” Foundation Trust and is the principal provider of hospital services to the population of Harrogate and Ripon and the surrounding rural district with a catchment population of 185,000.

This post is not approved for training and does not carry an NTN, therefore applicants will unfortunately not be entitled to an E-portfolio, however working at Harrogate District Hospital will enhance individuals’ clinical experience, portfolio and progression.

For more information or to arrange an informal visit to the department, please contact the Acute team on 01423 555314.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Work as part of a team to support and help to provide a comprehensive medical service within the Trust.
  • Candidate will gain fantastic experience in acute management of all medical patients, by providing emergency treatment to stabilise acute conditions, both before admission and during admission, through the SDEC, and by working on the tier 3 on call rota (as agreed at interview).
  • Opportunity to follow up with subsequent investigations and follow up patients in the CAT clinic. This will allow candidate to consolidate comprehensive management skills.
  • To provide prospective cover on a shared basis with colleagues for annual and study leave for colleagues. Candidate will be allowed to attend regional meetings by arrangement with consultants and when funding is available.
