Job overview

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Trust Grade Registrar to join the Emergency Department at the Royal Berkshire Hospital.
The successful candidate will be involved in all aspects of direct patient care in the Emergency Department (ED), as well provide leadership and manage the department at night.

Dedicated Consultant supervision and guidance will be available throughout the duration of the post.

This post is not recognised for training. Depending on the candidate’s experience and RCEM membership exam status, holders of this post typically evolve towards any of the following career paths:
  • SAS Specialty Doctor and Specialist Grade (subject to further application when eligible).
  • Join a programme in Higher Specialty Training in Emergency Medicine, leading to CCT entry to the Specialist Register (subject to further application when eligible).
  • CESR pathway to the Specialist Register. The Department is equipped with the resource and knowledge to support any of these career aspirations by dedicating time for study leave, secondments to Acute Medicine, Intensive Care Unit and/or Anaesthetics (subject to the individual candidate’s needs) .

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be involved in all aspects of the care of patients in the Emergency Department(ED). They will have direct responsibility for the management of patients. A consultant is present on the shop floor between 8am to 00:00.

Outside these hours one of the middle grade doctors is designated to undertake the ‘lead role’ and works in close liaison with the nurse co-ordinator to ensure the department runs efficiently.

  • Build up experience and skills in Emergency Medicine, required for any future application for specialist training.
  • Working as a staff grade doctor could lead towards the required threshold for a SAS and Specialty Doctor contract in the future, ultimately achieving Specialist in Emergency Medicine (subject to all thresholds being met).
  • Support in undertaking any additional activities of choice, such as fellowships in research, clinical education, ultrasound etc. These could help diversify the candidate’s portfolio and enhance their profile in any direction their steer their career.
  • The shift pattern typically is a mix of early, mid- and late shifts, as well as night shifts and weekends, on average 40 hours/ week. The rota is DRS4-compliant and managed by a dedicated rota admin team. Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucially important for job satisfaction and prevention of burnout.
  • For those, seeking to pursue the CESR route, we can provide appropriate study leave time towards exam preparation (FRCEM), as well as secondments to other acute specialities (i.e. Acute Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine). The Department does have CESR Consultant representation which would be of particular benefit for any interested applicant.
  • Study leave budget for relevant life support courses – ALS, ATLS, EPLS, as well as the prospect of achieving Instructor status in any of them.
  • Annual appraisals with tailored Personal Development Plan. This annual supervised activity would ensure a seamless revalidation process when due.
