Commissioning Chemistry Engineer

The Commissioning Chemistry Engineer would join the Commissioning Chemistry Team, working on the preparation and execution of chemistry commissioning activities for Hinkley Point C. As part of this team, you will provide expert advice on chemistry matters to the Commissioning Programme through the production and review of documents, supporting the resolution of emerging challenges and through being an advocate for excellence in chemistry.

The role will involve both detailed analysis and production of technical documents as well as hands on commissioning support during the delivery of key systems. Comprehensive training will be provided to ensure the successful candidate has the right breadth of knowledge, and you will need to balance this with long term deliverables and emerging workstreams.

The opportunity

This is an opportunity to be part of one of the most challenging and exciting projects in the UK as we continue to lead the rebirth of nuclear in this country. We are building two new nuclear reactors (European Pressurised Water Reactor – EPR) the first in a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK, providing low carbon electricity for around six million homes.

We require a diverse team of dedicated chemistry professionals to ensure we have the right people at the right time to achieve this.

If successful, you will work within the HPC Commissioning Programme, and be part of the Commissioning Chemistry Team, reporting to the Commissioning Chemistry Lead. Over the next few years, the team will grow significantly, and this role has the opportunity to help shape this growth and the delivery of commissioning chemistry at HPC, setting the benchmark for future projects.

Training is provided for this role and will be tailored to the successful candidate’s previous background and experience.

What you’ll be doing

In 2025 Hinkley Point C will be commissioning the Commissioning Effluent Treatment Plant and Demin Water Plant. As a Commissioning Chemistry Engineer, you will provide hands on support, contributing directly to the successful delivery of these key systems.

Additionally, you will lead and support on a selection of the work streams listed below. As the team is growing, the division of work can be shaped to the strengths, skills and development needs of the successful candidate, alongside those of the wider team.

Commissioning Chemistry Workstreams:

  • Commission chemical sampling and dosing systems and deliver the corresponding preparation documents and activities.
  • Provide chemistry advice for the commissioning of other systems and for the station wide commissioning tests.
  • Provide chemistry advice for open points and design modifications impacting commissioning.
  • Review documentation specifying chemical requirements for commissioning and oversee their application and monitoring throughout commissioning.
  • Lead the integration of chemistry into the wider commissioning processes.
  • Incorporate chemistry learning from the commissioning of the other EPRs into HPC’s commissioning processes and advocate for chemistry across the entire HPC project.
  • Manage the interfaces between commissioning and other chemistry support teams across the Hinkley Point C project.
  • Liaise with external stakeholders associated with chemistry, including regulators and industry working groups.

Who you are…

To excel in this role, you should have a strong understanding of nuclear power plant chemistry principles and objectives, along with experience in commissioning or operations at a nuclear power station. Your knowledge of preservation chemistry and the systems that support chemistry control and chemical safety management will be highly valuable.

If you have experience working within a project organisation, engaging with nuclear and environmental regulators, or hold chartered status with a relevant professional body, you’ll be even better suited for this opportunity.

Additional requirements for this role include:

  • A degree (or equivalent) in a chemistry-related discipline.
  • You have a proven track record of working within safety and quality cultures.
  • You are scientifically curious and eager to learn.
  • You can make operational decisions based on data.
