The Design and Technology Department at UCS comprises 5 full-University College School (UCS) is a leading independent day school in Hampstead, North London. We are seeking a reliable, organised and enthusiastic Design & Technology Technician to join our busy and well-equipped Design & Technology Department from September 2025.

About the Department

The Design & Technology Department consists of five full-time teachers, including the Head of Department, supported by a full-time technician and a term-time only technician. D&T is a core subject for pupils in Years 7 and 8, with a majority opting to continue in Year 9 and beyond.

The department delivers a modern, practical, and engaging curriculum, fostering creativity, technical skill, and problem-solving.

The Role

This is a hands-on and varied role that supports the day-to-day delivery of the subject. The successful candidate will work closely with teaching staff and pupils to prepare practical resources, maintain equipment, and ensure that lessons run smoothly and safely.

A key part of the role is maintaining a safe and well-organised workshop environment.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Preparing teaching and workshop areas with tools, equipment and materials.
  • Providing in-class technical support during practical lessons.
  • Assisting staff in developing and producing teaching resources.
  • Maintaining and repairing tools, equipment, and machinery (including CAD/CAM).
  • Managing stock and ordering materials as required, while maintaining accurate records of expenditure.
  • Supporting the Head of Department in ensuring all health and safety policies are implemented, including reviewing risk assessments and displaying safety guidance.
  • Assisting with displays, exhibitions, competitions and digital showcases to help raise the profile of Design & Technology within and beyond the school.
  • Supporting the development and delivery of Computer-Aided Design and Manufacture (CAD/CAM).

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has experience in a workshop or technical support role, ideally in an educational setting.
  • Is familiar with, or willing to be trained in, the use and maintenance of a wide range of tools and machinery.
  • Has good knowledge of health and safety practices.
  • Has a practical and proactive approach, with strong organisational skills.
  • Enjoys working in a creative environment and with young people.
