Are you a compassionate, skilled, and dedicated nurse looking to make a difference in the lives of children with diabetes?

The Children and Young People's diabetes team at The Whittington Hospital is seeking an experienced Paediatric Nurse to join our dynamic and supportive team, as a band 6 Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse (PDSN).

As a key member of our paediatric diabetes service, you will have the opportunity to work closely with children, young people, and their families, providing expert care and support in the management of type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

We take pride in delivering personalised care to our local community. As a close-knit team, we work collaboratively to build strong relationships with our patients, so we can provide the support they need to reach their full potential.

Our nursing team consists of two Band 6 nurses and one Band 7 Nurse Prescriber, who also serves as the Lead Nurse for the North Central London Diabetes Network.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert clinical support to children and young people with diabetes, both in outpatient clinics , community, and hospital settings.
  • Develop and implement individualised care plans in collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Offer education and training to children, families, and healthcare professionals on diabetes management, including insulin therapy, blood glucose monitoring, and lifestyle changes.
  • Monitor and assess patient progress, offering timely interventions when necessary.
  • Promote and support psychological well-being for children and families managing diabetes.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and clinical audits.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest diabetes care practices and research to ensure the highest standard of care.
  • Provide support and education to healthcare professionals, school staff and other organisations

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Registered Nurse (Paediatric) with the NMC.
  • Excellent communication skills with children, families, and healthcare teams.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience in teaching and training both patients and healthcare professionals.

Desirable:

  • Experience in a similar role in paediatric diabetes care.
  • Strong clinical skills in diabetes management, including insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitoring, and insulin therapy.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies in diabetes management.
  • Post-registration qualification in diabetes care
