Overview

We wish to appoint a Clinical Fellow to join our Critical Care team at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GHNHSFT).

Job purpose

This role will support the running of both Critical Care units in Gloucestershire Royal and Cheltenham General Hospitals. The post will also support the provision of on call services across both sites.

This role will complement our current junior and middle grade rotas to continue to provide the high level of care for which our units are proud to deliver.

Integral to the responsibilities of our posts are the following objectives:

Main duties of the job

You will form part of the resident team and out of hours provide airway cover for the unit.

Day time work consists of taking part in daily ward rounds, undertake procedures and jobs to support the care of Critical Care patients along with reviewing referrals.

You will also support the Outreach team and work closely with the wider Critical Care MDT.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Critical Care Services lead by Clinical Lead, Simon Webster.

The Critical Care service comprises of 18 other Consultants:

Our Critical Care services are delivered across two unit, one on the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital site and one on the Cheltenham General site.

The two units admit approximately 1,500 patients a year. We support elective surgical services including Upper GI resection work, head and neck cancer services, three counties Gynae-Oncology services, a busy vascular unit. We have a busy medical admissions workload supporting all specialities including interventional cardiology, haematology, oncology, respiratory and renal medicine.

We have the greatest number of paediatric admissions outside of PICU in the South West with between 40 and 50 admissions per year.

We pride ourselves on our MDT approach to patient care and the flat hierarchy within our units. We have the support of an excellent outreach team across both our sites and we work closely together to ensure the best patient care.

Gloucestershire Critical Care department is a dynamic, hard-working unit that delivers excellent outcomes for our patients and is a fantastic place to work, learn and contribute.

Clinical responsibilities
  • Provide care to Critical Care patients
  • Reviewing Critical Care referrals from throughout the hospital
  • Support the provision of an on-call rota in a 1:8 frequency
  • Support the MDT on Critical Care
  • Participate in shared decision making for ongoing management of Critical Care patients
  • Take part in audit
  • Assist in recruitment to ongoing research projects

Education and training

While these posts are not educationally approved nor recognised by the Royal College for training purposes, they are educationally sound and well supported.

The department offers weekly formal teaching sessions on Friday afternoons to which all staff are encouraged to attend.

Continuing professional development

The department encourages post holders to take part in audit, Quality Improvement (QI) activity on the units. In addition, the department is active in recruiting to several ongoing research projects and opportunities to take part including taking on the role of associate Principal Investigator are encouraged.

Clinical Governance

The department of Critical Care has robust Clinical governance processes with a monthly CG meeting and two monthly mortality and morbidity review.

Essential criteria
  • Full General Medical Council registration

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 6-12 months anaesthetic experience and completion of IAC
  • Ability to manage independently an airway out of hours
  • Ability to work closely with Critical Care MDT
Desirable criteria
  • Previous Critical Care experience
  • ALS
  • APLS

Essential criteria
  • Flexibility and willingness to work together with colleagues to support on call commitments
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clinical colleagues
  • Able to work co-operatively as a team member
Desirable criteria
  • Previous Critical Care experience
  • Ability to think laterally
