An enthusiastic, inspiring and well-qualified Art and Design Technology educator is required to join our thriving independent prep school from September 2026; to deliver specialist Art and DT lessons to children from Years 3-6. The successful candidate should also show an interest in supporting the work of colleagues in other year groups and collaborating in cross-curricular projects.

DT, Art and all the performing and expressive arts are seen as essential to the children’s development at St John’s. As well as teaching children, the successful applicant will encourage children to use our excellent Art facilities throughout and beyond the school day, offer the children a rich range of artistic experiences, foster the talents of our most able young artists and will forge links with colleagues in others Arts subjects and across the curriculum to enhance the learning of all our children.

The Art and DT Departments

Classes (of no more than twenty children) are taught in mixed ability form groups up to and including Year 6. Lessons for older children (Years 5-8) take place at the Senior House site whilst younger children are taught at Byron House. Both sites have specialist, well resourced Art and DT classrooms.

The school promotes a Quality First Teaching approach and Children with specific learning difficulties are supported by the school’s exceptional Learning Support department.

Art and DT Teacher Job Description

This part-time post (50%) offers the chance to teach specialist Art and DT lessons to children in the 7-11 (Years 3-6) age range. Overall, a 50% appointee will teach for approximately 10 hours per week, with duties, cover lessons and meetings in addition.

The School is committed to providing the best possible training for staff, through a programme of internal training days and through the funding of external training. A successful candidate’s training needs will be considered as part of the School’s comprehensive and supportive induction programme.
