Clinical To provide specialist psychological assessments of clients in the stroke service based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources including psychological and neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the clients care.
To formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of a clients psychological problems, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the clients problems, and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy, across the full range of care settings.
To be responsible for implementing a range of psychological interventions for individuals, carers, families and groups, within and across teams employed individually and in synthesis, adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses.
To evaluate and make decisions about treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family or group.
To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment and discharge of clients whose problems are managed by psychologically based standard care plans. To provide specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to clients formulation, diagnosis and treatment plan.
To contribute directly and indirectly to a psychologically based framework of understanding and care to the benefit of all clients of the specialty, across all settings and agencies serving the client group. To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and to provide advice to other professions on psychological aspects of risk assessment and risk management.
To act as case manager or care co-ordinator where appropriate, ensuring the provision of a care package appropriate for the clients needs, coordinating the work of others involved with care, taking responsibility for arranging reviews as required and communicating effectively with the client, his/her family and all others involved in the network of care, and to monitor progress during the course of multi-disciplinary interventions.
To communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner, information concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of clients under their care and to monitor progress during the course of both uni and multi-disciplinary care. To manage occasional antagonistic, verbally and physically aggressive situations.
To plan and organise a personal caseload; to ensure that service needs and priorities are met; to deliver that service at all appropriate levels. To provide expertise, advice and support to facilitate the effective and appropriate provision of psychological care by all members of the treatment team.
To be able to concentrate on client assessment, treatment sessions and for groups. To communicate highly complex and sensitive information to patients in a possibly hostile, antagonistic or highly emotive atmosphere. To deal with distressing situations related to clients and their families.
Clinical activity will necessitate sitting in a constrained position during treatment and assessment when working with clients. Clinical Administration To maintain the highest standards of clinical record keeping including electronic data entry and recording, report writing and the responsible exercise of professional self governance in accordance with professional codes of practice of the British Psychological Society and Trust policies and procedures.
To report upon clients progress to the referring agent and relevant others. To arrange and manage referrals and complete the appropriate administration for discharges in accordance with department policy and professional guidelines. To maintain an up-to-date record of clinical activity.
To participate in departmental meetings relating to referrals and clinical policy. Management, policy and service development To advise both service and professional management on those aspects of the service where psychological and/or organisational matters need addressing.
To convey any changes in service policy to the specific areas of clinical practice for which they are responsible. To manage the workloads of assistant and graduate psychologists, within the framework of the service policies and procedures. To be involved, as appropriate, in the recruitment of assistant/graduate psychologists including short listing and interviewing.
To participate in the Trusts Performance Review process and developing personal management objectives. Professional Development, Supervision and Training To ensure the development and maintenance of the highest professional standards of practice, through active participation in internal and external CPD training and development programmes, in consultation with the post holders professional and service manager(s).
To fulfil the requirements of the Trust policy and practice for Continuing Professional Development. To undertake training that will develop highly specialist skills and knowledge. To continue to gain wider post-qualification experience of clinical psychology over and above that provided within the principal service areas where the post holder is employed.
To develop skills in the area of professional post-graduate teaching, training and supervision and to provide supervision to other MDT staffs psychological work, as appropriate. To take part in regular clinical professional supervision and appraisal and maintain an active engagement with current developments in the field of clinical psychology and related disciplines.
To undertake clinical training programme to permit the clinical supervision of psychologists in training. To contribute to the development and articulation of best practice in psychology across the service, by continuing to develop the skills of a reflexive and reflective scientist practitioner.
To maintain up to date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies and issues in relation to both the specialty and psychology in general. Teaching, training, and supervision To provide professional and clinical supervision of assistant/graduate psychologists and the supervision of trainee clinical psychologists.
To provide post-qualification training (CPD) and clinical professional supervision to clinical psychologists attached to the specialty or working within the Department. To provide advice, consultation, training and supervision to staff working with the client group across a range of agencies and settings, where appropriate.
IT To utilise the IT equipment provided within the Department. To use computing and keyboard skills as appropriate and apply effective use of programme software. To use electronic means of communication as appropriate and effectively administer the e-mail account.
To utilise effective computer assisted and other audio-visual aids in teaching and training. To be responsible for saving and storing information sent by electronic means. Information To routinely provide required and requested information from line managers.
To comply with the information requirements of the Department information system. To utilise information for fulfilment of clinical practice and development. To contribute to the development of the information system in the department. Clinical Governance To assist in the development and maintenance of all aspects of clinical governance pertinent to the service.
To be responsible for aspects of Clinical Governance that apply to the speciality. Confidentiality To respect confidentiality of all matters that they may learn relating to their employment, to patients, other members of staff and to the general public.
All staff are expected to respect the requirements under the Data Protection Act. To maintain the confidentiality of all files, documents and similar materials within the department and the Trust, subject to current legislation. Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards To discharge all duties in keeping with the British Psychological Societys Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards and within the Clinical and Ethical standards established by the Department and Trust as a whole.
