Apprentice Phlebotomist

To extract blood samples from patients/donors in a manner that makes the blood sample suitable/fit for analytical, therapeutic or diagnostic testing and purpose. Working in hospital wards, clinics, community-based clinics within other organisations and NHS Trusts and also in patients homes.
There is a requirement to work weekends, bank holidays and cover service delivery times between 08.00 and 20.00 as the roster dictates. The jobholder will be undertaking a training programme within the Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust (LTHT).
The training will be delivered through formal education either in-house and or via external providers, and clinical placements. They will be involved in providing direct and indirect care for patients in support of and supervised by a Phlebotomist and where identified as appropriate by the Phlebotomy Supervisor.

It is expected that the apprentice will commit to self-directed study and successfully complete the training programme within the contract period. The jobholder will contribute to the maintenance of an environment for effective care. Education and Training To participate fully in the training programme for the BTEC level 2 Diploma Healthcare Sciences (Phlebotomy apprenticeship) by: i) Attending formal study sessions ii) Participating in informal study opportunities iii) Be willing to undertake self-directed learning ii) Complete all tasks and assignments iii) Apply skills and knowledge to patient care in the clinical area iv) Contribute to regular performance and progress reviews To successfully complete the academic elements of the programme as specified by the employer and the training organisation.

To complete successfully the clinical competencies related to national occupational standards as specified by the employer and the training organisation. To achieve a minimum of Level 1 in numeracy and literacy Functional skills and apply this learning in the workplace.

Support team members with appropriate clinical activities under direct supervision Develop the skills to correctly identify patients who require a blood test, adhering to LTHT Positive Patient Identification Policy. Develop the knowledge and skills of using the ICE system to identify correct patient, appropriate sample required and labels to support obtaining a blood samples Develop an understanding and demonstrate competence the safe collection of blood samples, utilising different techniques.

Demonstrate an understanding of independently managing own allocated workload, including undertaking non-routine requests for blood specimen collections Develop an understanding and awareness of factors relating to specific blood tests Develop the skills to ensure samples are correctly labelled and transported to appropriate laboratories Develop the ability to identify, select and utilise a suitable site fit for the purpose of blood collection Develop the ability to identify, select and use suitable/appropriate equipment for the specimen collection Develop the ability to communicate effectively with the patient prior to and during obtaining a blood sample to minimise distress or discomfort caused during the blood collection Develop the ability to communicate in a non-judgemental or discriminatory manner and be able to overcome barriers utilising other methods of communication eg.

Non-verbal, interpreters Develop an understanding of which advice to give patients, guardians and carers regarding venepuncture site and other complications post procedure Demonstrate awareness of duty of care, ensuring patients fit for discharge following bloods being taken.

Develop good working relationship Develop good communication skills that demonstrate courtesy and respect Form good relationships with other team members including answering the telephone and passing on messages Support effective teamwork by undertaking other clinical activities, under direct supervision, which would be expected of a Band 2 Phlebotomist To be alert to issues of risk and concern about care provided raising any concerns observed via the Trusts Whistleblowing Policy and supporting processes.
