About us
The Gallery Services department provides technical services across the Science Museum, maintaining a diverse array of interactive exhibits and displays. This skilled technical team supports the museum in delivering an ambitious programme of activities ensuring a high-quality visitor experience.The workshop is equipped with both engineering and woodwork machines, as well as a laser cutter, 3D printer and welding facilities.
We are recruiting for a Workshop Manager to join our electromechanical team to oversee workshop activities and manage the engineering apprentices through their final years of study. This role is based at the Science Museum in London, working full-time (36 hours per week) on a fixed-term contract for 23 months.
About the role
As Workshop Manager you will be responsible for overseeing the maintenance and operation of the workshop, ensuring compliance with safety regulations. You will line manage two apprentices, supporting them through their studies and ensuring their ongoing safety.You will develop and run toolbox talks and other training materials to keep the wider team of technicians up to date on best practice.
You will also support daily museum operations, the maintenance and repair of hands-on electro-mechanical exhibits, including making replacement parts using a range of hand and machine tools. In addition to supporting the operation of our historic working objects such as the Burnley Mill Steam Engine.
About you
You will have a time served engineering apprenticeship or equivalent qualification and experience of managing, mentoring or leading others in a workshop environment. You will have a good understanding of workshop processed and health and safety, with previous experience in management of workshop machinery and procedures.
You will be an effective collaborator, able to work with a team possessing a wide range of different experience and backgrounds, in a friendly and approachable manner, with a proactive and positive approach to teaching others about how things work.
