Bedford Interventional Radiology is seeking Band 6 Nurses to join our team, caring for patients undergoing a range of IR procedures and supporting the coordination of our small, dedicated team during shifts (four days per week—see post details).

Successful candidates will have strong patient assessment and observation skills and a desire to grow into a team‑leader role as they gain experience.

Applicants must have experience working in an acute hospital setting. Experience in radiology or theatre nursing is desirable but not essential, as full training will be provided.

Main duties of the job
  • Assess patients for interventional radiology procedures using pre‑assessment criteria and provide clear information about their planned procedure.
  • Care for patients during procedures, offering support, monitoring observations, administering medications, inserting and removing cannulas, and checking CBG levels.
  • Provide post‑procedure care, monitoring recovery and arranging safe transfer to recovery areas or wards.
  • Assist with preparing sterile fields and specialist equipment, undertaking scrub and circulating nurse roles during procedures.
  • Wear appropriate PPE, including lead aprons, during fluoroscopy cases.
  • Safely administer sedation following completion of sedation training.
  • Liaise with Radiologists regarding procedures, manage bookings, and coordinate with bed managers, specialist nurses and the wider team to ensure smooth patient pathways.
  • Act as a practice assessor for nursing students, support learners across the MDT, and help coordinate student placements.
  • Work independently to organise, prioritise and coordinate your daily workload, and take on Nurse‑in‑Charge responsibilities once experienced.

  • Assist in the organisation, delivery and evaluation of nursing care for patients undergoing procedures within the Imaging Department (e.g., liver biopsies, lung biopsies, nephrostomies), including care for terminally ill, disabled, elderly and confused patients.
  • Ensure patient safety and comfort before, during and after procedures, and complete nurse‑led discharge where appropriate.
  • Work independently to organise, coordinate and prioritise your daily workload.
  • Communicate effectively and sensitively—face‑to‑face, verbally and by telephone—with clinical, technical and administrative staff across the Trust, as well as with patients, relatives, carers and visitors, including those whose first language is not English.
  • Assist Radiologists during diagnostic procedures in line with professional training and departmental protocols.
  • Arrange imaging appointments as required, liaising with wards, radiographers, theatres, staff and patients, and providing any necessary preparation or instructions

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Diploma or degree level RN Level 1 or equivalent
  • NMC Registered
Desirable criteria
  • Mentorship course
  • Revalidation

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Undertakes a range of nursing procedures competently without supervision
  • Provides good level of patient care and has ability to assess clinical information and adjust care to suit patient condition

  • Has attended radiation protection training/ Aware of radiation protection training
  • Worked in IR theatre
