About the role

Balfour Beatty are looking for a Health, Safety and Wellbeing Advisor to join our Central Rail Systems Alliance (CRSA) Team, in Crewe.

Balfour Beatty, in alliance with Network Rail, AtkinsRéalis, and TSO, is delivering track renewals, crossings, and infrastructure upgrades across key UK rail routes. By combining expertise and using innovative digital and mechanised solutions, the alliance aims to improve efficiency and create a more reliable railway.

The Health, Safety and Wellbeing Advisor will collaborate with the HSE Manager to provide guidance, support, advice, and governance on all health and safety matters to the project. Partnering with Project Leads, the role ensures compliance with legislative requirements, the UK Business Management System (BMS), and Network Rail’s standards.

What you'll be doing

Role Purpose:

Ensure Compliance: Support projects in meeting legislative requirements, the health and safety standards of the UK Business Management System (BMS), and Network Rail's health and safety requirements for the alliance.

Support Alliance Delivery: Collaborate with the Alliance to ensure the effective delivery of health and safety obligations, offering technical advice, guidance, and support as required.

Promote Learning and Best Practice: Actively contribute to the sharing of knowledge, lessons learned, and best practices across Balfour Beatty and Network Rail.

Performance Reporting: Monitor and report on contract performance, including documenting and sharing best practice case studies.

Accountabilities will include:

  • Implement the HSWES strategy for the business.
  • Provide professional health, safety, and wellbeing (HS&W) services, including the review and approval of CDM documentation
  • Build and develop strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Oversee HS&W governance within the region, ensuring the effective close-out of actions from investigations, audits, and site inspections.
  • Ensure accurate reporting and analysis of performance.
  • Oversee and, when necessary, conduct investigations into incidents, ensuring lessons learned are communicated effectively.
  • Provide expert guidance, support, and coaching to contracts, projects, and offices through structured site visits, communications, and training.
  • Maintain and enhance personal HSWES knowledge and skills.
  • Support and sustain focus on the behavioural safety programme across the area.
  • Promote health and safety initiatives and innovations across the area and the wider Alliance.
  • Conduct site HSW audits, inspections, visits, and joint tours.
  • Deliver inductions, toolbox talks, and other health, safety, and wellbeing briefings.

Who we're looking for

Experience:

Essential:

  • Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g., IOSH/IEMA) or actively working towards it.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent qualification.
  • Strong analytical skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Consistently display and demonstrate Balfour Beatty behaviours.
  • Proven experience as an incident investigator.
  • Relevant experience aligned with the specific project or business area.

Desirable:

  • Experience within the rail construction environment.
  • A recognised training qualification.
  • Additional relevant skills or qualifications in any technical area
