Job Summary

James Maciver Costumes is looking for a creative individual who can translate the costume Designer’s ideas and drawings into real clothes, in consultation with the Workroom Supervisor and Head Cutter. They will be required to work closely with a team of Creative Costume Makers / Machinists or independently on specific projects assigned to them.

The role will be based at the creative studio in Milton Keynes and be working closely with the pattern department and will be responsible to the Workroom Supervisor.

We are looking for someone with 1 years’ experience of cutting out fabrics either in a studio, home environment or industrial setting. The person will be able to confidently perform the key duties and responsibilities as set out within the job description below.
Duties and responsibilities
  • To follow working notes and drawings / instructions relating to the makeup of the garments.
  • To follow costume design specifications and details that are indicated on the design cutting sheet and patterns.
  • Under guidance of Head Cutter produce clear and accurate cutting sheets for documentation.
  • To be able to use own initiative manage and organise their own workload and plan time to ensure each assigned project or task is completed within the agreed timescales.
  • To regularly meet and update the Workroom Supervisor regarding the daily / weekly workload.
  • Responsible for reporting all low running stock items to the Head Cutter.
  • To communicate any questions / concerns to the Workroom Supervisor or Head Cutter to ensure that the project handover is as efficient as possible.
  • Responsible for communicating effectively with the rest of the studio team to ensure maximum efficiency and productivity.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of paper patterns.
  • To ensure all working notes, documentation and photographs are compiled and documented efficiently on the design sheet.
  • To ensure that swatches of fabric are taken and documented along with any cutting lay details.
  • To work with consideration of others within the team to ensure efficient use of staff resources.
Essential skills and qualifications
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Knowledge and experience of handling a wide range of fabrics including woven, Lycra, knit and chiffon.
  • Experience of cutting out fabrics from a supplied pattern within a fashion / costume or home making industry.
  • Minimum of 1 years’ experience of working within the garment making/ costume making industry.
  • Good time-management skills, including the ability to turn work around quickly.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • To have a good understanding of written English.
  • Basic understanding of garment construction.
  • Flexible, hardworking and organised with a positive and constructive attitude.
  • The ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Ability to work with due regard to Health & Safety.

We are a fast-paced dynamic and creative expanding team of 27 employees based in Milton Keynes, working with clients around the UK and Internationally.
Our clients range from independent artists to large-scale companies within the entertainment and hospitality industry with various requirements and needs.
We work on various seasonal calendar events throughout the whole year including but not limited to Christmas, Gay pride, New Year, Easter.

Hours and environment
Your normal working week will be 37.5 hours per week Monday to Friday with a 30-minute lunch break. You will be asked to work additional hours paid at the agreed rate of contract. You will be working in a busy shared studio space with access to free parking dependent on availability.
Holiday entitlement

You will receive 28 days paid annual leave including bank holidays (pro rata).

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: £23,500.00-£26,000.00 per year
