Main duties of the job

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to be in the position to offer a 10.25PA locum Consultant Clinical Oncology post specialising in Breast and Urological Cancers (including oligometastatic and prostate SABR). The post is based in Southampton and will also provide some regional site-specific Clinical Oncology services.

UHS hosts a comprehensive Cancer Centre serving to a local population of approximately 1.9 million. The Southampton radiotherapy department has 6 Elekta Linacs with a further matched satellite Linac on the Basingstoke Hospital site. Treatment techniques include VMAT, SABR and SRS with image-guided radiotherapy and surface guided radiotherapy implemented across all treatment units.

The role includes provision of radiotherapy services, supervision of SACT treatment and supporting urgent and inpatient patient care in Clinical Oncology. The post outlined in the Job Description is a Breast & Urological cancers job plan; other tumour sites combined with one of these two will be considered and we would be keen to discuss possibilities with potential candidates.

This is a post with a 10.25 PA job plan, but candidates wishing to work less than full time will be welcome to apply.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This post will be clinically responsible for the care of patients with Breast and Urological cancers within UHS and across the wider region. The Urology elements of the post will be to support the existing team at UHS and SFT. A post holder with suitable training and enthusiasm would also have the opportunity to join the oligometastatic SABR service.

An additional component will be to provide Clinical Oncology input to the UHS inpatient Clinical Oncology and Acute Oncology services. The AOS service manages emergency admissions of patients with oncological symptoms and diagnoses via assessment and support methods and has also seen a fast and steady growth in activity within recent years.

The post holder will be expected to actively participate as a member of the Clinical Oncology Breast and Urology teams and will:

  • Attend the weekly UHS Breast MDT and clinics
  • Attend the weekly UHS and SFT Urology MDTs and clinics
  • Plan and supervise radiotherapy for Breast and Urology patients
  • Plan and supervise Systemic Anti Cancer Therapy for Breast and Urology patients
  • Conduct/ supervise on-treatment review clinics
  • Engage in Radiotherapy Peer review meetings
  • Actively engage in the management of, recruitment in to and running of clinical trials
The post holder will also contribute to the urgent management of Clinical Oncology patients including:
  • Participation in the inpatient care of Clinical Oncology patients with Breast and Urological cancers
  • Provide advice and support for the management of patients admitted via the Acute Oncology service
  • Provide advice and support for the management of emergency radiotherapy patients
  • Undertaking post take ward rounds including management of patients admitted via the Acute Oncology service
  • Participation in on call rota for management of Clinical Oncology patients out of hours, providing advice during evenings and undertaking daily ward rounds during weekends and Bank Holidays (1:16)
As a University Hospital:
  • All consultants are expected to actively participate in teaching and training of junior medical and nursing staff and allied health professionals
  • All consultants are expected to clinically supervise junior medical staff
  • Involvement in educational supervision is expected, subject to General Medical Council requirements
  • Active involvement in co-ordinating education and training within the department is also encouraged

Qualifications, Training & Experience

Essential criteria
  • GMC Registration
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Broad experience in Clinical Oncology including breast and urological malignancies
  • Experience of multidisciplinary team working
  • Experience in the management of breast and/or urological cancers
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised training in academic oncology with postgraduate qualification cancers
  • SABR experience cancers
  • Significant experience in Oncology research
  • Experience of working within the NHS
  • Teaching experience
  • CCT in Clinical Oncology (including up to 6 months before CCT) or appropriate qualifications and experience to allow entry on to the Specialist Register
