We are excited to advertise a permanent post for a Clinical Psychologist to work at the Nottingham Centre for Transgender Health. We are looking for a band 8a Specialist Clinical (newly qualified or soon to be qualified) Clinical Psychologist.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Clinical Psychologist who has an interest in working with gender diverse adults and in transgender health. You would be expected to provide psychological assessment, formulation, and individualised therapeutic intervention, as well as diagnostic assessments for gender incongruence.
The successful applicant will have protected time to engage in training in transgender health to support them to work in this area and provide formal qualifications. Clinical supervision will be provided by one of the Principal Clinical Psychologists that work in the service and there are good links with the wider Clinical Psychology team in the trust and CPD events.
There are also well-established links & regular meetings that occur with Clinical Psychologists that work in transgender health across the country. You would be strongly encouraged & supported to seek out developmental opportunities including therapeutic skills, service improvement, supervision (trainees, assistant psychologist, and undergraduate students), teaching, and research.

The Clinical Psychology team sits within the wider MDT structure, and the team ethos embraces compassion, acknowledging strengths, and working collaboratively.

Main duties of the job

To work as a Clinical Psychologist and part of the Nottingham Centre for Transgender Health to support patients in line with the NHS England national service specification.

The role requires the post holder to undertake both psychological assessments and diagnostic assessment for transgender patients.

The post holder will be part of the team providing a clinical psychology service to patients and, on occasions their families, including direct and indirect clinical work, supervision and training of others, clinically relevant research/audit and specific roles that support the Principal Clinical Psychologist, Clinical Lead, and Service Manager in developing the service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Nottingham Centre for Transgender Healthcare (NCTH) is a national NHS England comm issioned service There is a significant and long wait time from referral to first assessment. NCTH have worked with NHS England on a number of pilot projects to reduce wait times.

The post holder will be a member of the multi-disciplinary service, working with Clinical Psychologists, Consultant Psychiatrists, General Practitioners, Consultant Nurse, Clinical Nurse Specialists and Speech and Language Therapists.

This post requires the ability to work with people using a variety of communication methods, and a wide range of psychological and other needs.

The post will involve completing diagnostic assessments for gender incongruence (including recommendation for medical intervention) and psychological assessments for therapeutic intervention. The post will also involve consultation with the wider MDT re formulations regarding gender and maintaining appropriate structures for discussing cases in a psychologically minded way.

Liaison with a broad range of other disciplines and agencies, including General Practice, other transgender services and providers will be a key aspect of this post.

Physical Requirements

Essential criteria
  • Able to sit still for long periods in clinical settings or for report writing, however reasonable adjustments will be made for disabled individuals in line with the Equality Act 2010.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Psychology degree or equivalent, conferring GBC status
  • Doctoral level qualification in Clinical Psychology (or the equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) conferring HCPC status & as accredited by the BPS
Desirable criteria
  • PGCert or PGDip in Gender Identity Medicine
  • Further training in additional psychological therapy models

Training

Essential criteria
  • Further post qualification training in supervision
Desirable criteria
  • Further training in relevant specific assessment methods and/or therapeutic interventions
  • Experience of providing supervision to others

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Of working psychologically with gender diverse people and of interventions with individuals and care systems.
  • Service Evaluation
Desirable criteria
  • Publication in peer- reviewed research journals.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Broad understanding of theories and interventions relevant to gender diverse adults and transgender healthcare.
Desirable criteria
  • Critical awareness of current themes in transgender healthcare policy and research
