About the programme

The terrestrial Natural Capital and Ecosystem Assessment Programme (tNCEA) sits in the Central Analysis and Insights Directorate, overseen by Defra’s Chief Scientific Advisor. The programme aims to deliver a world-class knowledge capability for our natural environment which enables us to enhance our landscapes, improve biodiversity and encourage innovation.
It will; develop integrated, adaptive and collaborative methods to measure our land and freshwater environments; transform physical and digital infrastructure to underpin, facilitate and present our understanding to aid decision-making; and deliver data, evidence-based insight and understanding to inform ambitious, proactive and sustainable policy decisions.

The operating value of the Programme is c.£55m a year with completion due in 2028. Key partners include; the Environment Agency, Forest Research, JNCC, Natural England, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.

About the tNCEA Data & Digital team

The Data & Digital team is one of four G6 led teams in the core of the NCEA programme. This small team is responsible for managing the development of the core digital infrastructure for the programme, as well as overseeing and driving production of Analysis Ready Data as monitoring collection is completed and data prepared by delivery partners.

About the role

The programme is looking for a G6 Data & Digital to lead work to develop and deliver the Digital Infrastructure for the NCEA programme, and the Analysis Ready Datasets for policy customers. The postholder will manage all things in this space including data governance and hosting solutions.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead delivery of the NCEA Digital Infrastructure, overseeing DDTS delivery and ensuring that progress and development is in line with overall programme objectives at all times
  • Coordinate with Partner leads to find collaborative solutions and agreements to issues eg. Metadata, hosting solutions
  • Oversee and work with partners to drive the production of Analysis Ready Datasets for customers
  • Oversee and drive solutions to good Data Governance and sharing agreements
  • Act as Product Owner (in the development phase) for the tNCEA Digital Infrastructure project, working closely with DDTS with a day to day relationship, making sure the team are working on the highest priority things
  • Lead a small team and be an active member of SLT driving programme performance and outcomes
