Main duties of the job

UHS are looking for a dynamic and forward-thinking radiographer to join their radiotherapy team as a data entry and checking radiographer. You will have leadership experience and organizational skills which will allow you co-ordinate and manage a busy workload whilst your excellent communication skills will be required to liaise with our medical physics department, clinicians, managers, treatment radiographers and the pre-treatment teams.

The UHS radiotherapy department (accross Southampton and Basingstoke) is equipped with 3 CT scanners, Elekta ABC and Varian RGSC, 7 Elekta Versa HD linacs, 3 with ExacTrac dynamic and iGuide systems, an HDR brachytherapy unit, mould room, XStrahl orthovoltage unit and a Mobetron intra-operative unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

In this role you will be the team leader in ‘secondary access’, where all patient plans are input into the record and verify system (Mosaiq) and checked. You will work closely with the patient pathway advanced practitioner and rotational radiographers to ensure that all radiotherapy plans are ready to treat in a timely manner.

You will liaise with the pre-treatment and physics planning teams as well as the treatment machines in order to co-ordinate replans, emergency treatments and ‘plan and treats’.

You will be responsible for the workflow management and prioritising the workload as it comes through secondary access in order to ensure that patient’s treatment plans are prepared efficiently and on time.

An important aspect of this role is the education and training of rotational radiographers, new graduates and students. You will work with the patient pathway AdP to develop and maintain appropriate competency frameworks and be responsible for training rotational radiographers in inputting, checking and manual calculations.

What we’re looking for:

We are looking for a dynamic, efficient and highly organised therapy radiographer with clinical experience and excellent communication skills to join the permanent patient plan preparation (secondary access) team.

Workflow management and workload prioritisation is essential in this role and therefore a thorough understanding of the clinical pathways is required to enable effective leadership of the secondary access team.

Problem solving and troubleshooting capabilities are highly useful in this role as well as the ability to remain calm under pressure.

Qualifications / training required

Essential criteria
  • Degree in Therapeutic Radiography, or Diploma of College of Radiographers.
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Defined area of specialist practice/experience with caseload management.
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree / Diploma in Management.
  • Project management/educational experience
  • Understanding of wider Radiotherapy agenda e.g. Radiotherapy specialised commissioning and service specifications.

Previous or relevant experience necessary

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working to a high standard with a wide variety of Radiotherapy techniques & equipment. Knowledge / Experience of modern Radiotherapy technique
  • Ability to lead a team as well as work as a team member.
  • Ability to manage a unit, use own initiative and be punctual
  • Be able to take instruction / directions and work within the confines of the role
Desirable criteria
  • Experience and practice with the latest technological advances.
