Occupational Therapy Assistant - Elective Orthopaedics

Are you interested in supporting the Occupational Therapy team in Elective Orthopaedics? If so, this role could be for you.

This Occupational Therapy Assistant post will be an administrative post which will assist in the day to day functioning of the Elective Orthopaedics Therapy Team. You will work mainly with the Occupational Therapy team but will also be asked to work alongside the Physiotherapy Team.

You must have experience in a team and are required to have previous experience involving direct contact with people. Previous experience in a health and social care setting and experience with administrative tasks are desirable. You will require computer skills.

Main duties of the job

JOB SUMMARY
  • Occupational Therapy provides key therapeutic assessments and interventions to patients in order to promote independence and facilitate optimum function for individuals. This is achieved by working with patients, families and carers and the multi-disciplinary to achieve agreed outcomes for patients.
  • The Occupational Therapy Assistant is a member of the Occupational Therapy Team and assists other Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy staff within their direct team and wider Therapy service in the performance of their duties as detailed below.
  • The post holder will work under the direction of any member of the Therapy team who has relevant delegation responsibilities to assist with patient treatment and other departmental duties.
  • To work to Therapy and UHL Service priorities.
  • To work with patients, carers and their families in a sensitive and professional manner
  • To liaise with other professionals for the benefit of the patient
  • To work with those who may have complex needs including physical, psychological and communication difficulties.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This role is essential to support the day to day functioning of the Occupational Therapy Team in Elective Orthopaedics. You will be required to:

  • To assist with the assessment treatment of patients under supervision of a qualified therapist
  • To issue, order and fit equipment for patients as directed by the member of the Therapy team who has delegation responsibilities for this task
  • To document interventions in a timely and accurate manner.
  • To monitorequipment and stock levels
  • To obtain information from individuals about their health status and needs.
  • To provide relevant information to patients/clients and carers.
  • To be aware of new treatment or initiatives being introduced within the department and how they affect the role of the Occupational Therapy Assistant.
  • To manage and organise your own time and activities in consultation with the relevant team member.
  • To assist with the ordering of equipment supplied to patients as delegated by the member of the Therapy team who has delegation responsibilities for this task.
  • To report back to the supervising clinician any relevant information regarding the patient and their circumstances.
  • To participate in the induction of new Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy staff.
  • To participate in the collection, recording and inputting of statistical information e.g. TIARA.
  • To undertake appropriate training and development to maintain a high quality of service including team development/in-service training.
  • To undertake an annual appraisal and actively participate in the setting and achieving of objectives.
  • To actively participate in monthly formal one:one meetings.
  • To recognise own limitations and awareness of when to seek guidance from registered staff.
  • To ensure that duties undertaken are within scope of practice and within the limits of competence and authority.
  • To liaise with colleagues and work across site and speciality if appropriate in order to ensure the provision of a seamless equitable service.
  • To undertake general administrative and clerical duties within the team, department and service.
  • To have shared responsibility for monitoring the safety of patients and team members whilst working in the hospital and be responsible
for actioning emergency procedures if their safety is compromised.
  • To take responsibility for maintaining own up to date Mandatory and statutory training.
  • To share responsibility for administrative duties and departmental tidiness.
  • To observe confidentiality of patients and employing authority’s business at all times.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE English and Maths (Grade C or above) or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Qualification in social or health care e.g. National Care Certificate

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in a team
  • Previous experience involving direct contact with people
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience in health/social care setting
  • Experience of clerical/admin tasks and computer skills

Communication and Relationship Skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates effective written communication

Disclosure and Barring Service Check

Please note if you are successful in obtaining this position and the post involves regulated activity you will be required to undertake a Disclosure & Barring Service check.

The Trust will pay for the check initially and the money will then be deducted from your salary over a three month period commencing on your first month's payment.

The current price of a check is £38 for an enhanced and £18 for a standard check.
