Are you a skilled accountant looking to develop your career within a forward-looking team focused on supporting development of an effective Trust-wide financial planning process, leading best-in-class financial strategy development and driving continuous improvement in financial processes to deliver value for money across the organisation?

If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join us at King’s in our focused Financial Strategy and Planning Team, where you will be working with other senior finance colleagues to ensure the finance function overall provides high quality, professional financial support to the Trust.
Your work will cover a portfolio including opportunities to support financial strategy, financial planning, investment appraisal, capital programme business partnering and effective reporting of key elements of financial recovery (including financial status of our efficiency programme).

You will enable the organisation to understand the requirements of its short and long term resource assumptions, providing complex, business focused advice in a way that supports our colleagues to respond to the financial pressures facing our organisation.

The post holder must have a recognised CCAB or equivalent qualification and have significant experience in senior roles within finance (within or outside of financial strategy and planning portfolio) and be fully committed to Continuous Professional Development.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be one of three Financial Planning Managers who will need to make decisions on a range of complex financial situations and be collectively responsible for:

  • Coordinating the financial planning of the Trust including the Annual Planning Review, Long term planning, monthly returns and forecasts.
  • Modelling long term planning assumptions (LTFM) to ensure the Trust’s financial strategy is refreshed in line with national guidance, local assumptions to drive our financial planning approach.
  • Reviewing business cases and managing the day-to-day governance of the Trust’s investment Board.
  • Effective and accurate production of elements of financial performance and recovery (including CIP) reporting both to internal and external stakeholders in line with best practice requirements
  • Providing business partnering to support the Trust’s capital programme.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To lead in the delivery and presentation of the financial element of the Trusts Annual Plan and to oversee the production of a reliable forecasting process

Work closely with the Head of Finance – MI, Analysis & Reporting to ensure the financial plan is accurately reflected in budgets.

Model the Trust short term (one year) and long-term financial plans taking account of the effect of cost pressures, service developments and income assumptions including revisions to the tariff and changes to national policy and legislation.

Support the production of longer-term strategic projections in partnership with other senior managers and to lead on financial modelling displaying the effect of proposed service changes on the organisation.

Requires excellent planning skills and knowledge of the corporate priorities and systems of the Trust to develop long term Service Business Plans that both progresses and influences organisational priorities.

Work with the Trust’s strategy team to ensure outcomes from the trust’s strategic framework, clinical strategy and estates strategy are captured and reflected in the Trust’s long-term financial plan.

To challenge assumptions with relevant individuals and to be responsible for ensuring that financial modelling is robust, accurate and in line with overall Trust objectives, assessing risks and identifying risk-mitigating actions as required.

Develop and deliver financial training to other members of the organisation (Finance and non-Finance) in specific relation to the trusts financial planning process.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Qualified CCAB accountant, with substantial experience at a senior level. Post holder must comply with all the professional ethics of the accounting body to which they are registered.
Desirable criteria
  • Participates in continuing professional development and maintains their professional registration.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant financial management experience at a senior level
  • Staff management experience including recruitment, selection, objective setting, appraisals and managing performance
  • Experience in managing major change programmes and projects within the NHS or comparable large organisation
Desirable criteria
  • Supporting managers and clinicians in the use of service line reporting & patient level cost information
  • Appropriate understanding of the different accounting treatments required for the NHS by legislation or Department of Health policies
  • Significant experience of the NHS or similar clinical environment

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Expert understanding of project management and accounting processes and best practice methods, including forecasting, modelling, trend analysis
  • Detailed understanding of the financial analysis required for the submission of service development business cases, including SWOT, Sensitivity analyses, payback period, Internal rate of return, discounted cash flows etc.
Desirable criteria
  • Detailed knowledge of the commissioning regime; knowledge of the structure of the national tariff and the effects of policies on care group income.
