As one of the UK’s newest cities (over 200,000 residents and growing) and with its proximity to London, Southend is focused on the future with ambitious strategic plans.The Director of Law and Governance and Monitoring Officer has restructured the Legal Services team to match these broader ambitions.
As part of this, the Director has hired a new Head of Legal focused on standards, performance, continuous improvement and organisational resilience, and is now looking to expand further by hiring 6 enthusiastic Lawyers and Senior Lawyers, with a range of experience.These positions are on a permanent basis and can be full-time or part-time depending on the level and team. The individual roles are set out below.

Your new role:
This is a position for a Legal Professional with some experience, but who does not meet the requirements for admission as a Solicitor/Legal Executive/Barrister in England & Wales. This position is on a permanent, full-time basis. As a Non-UK Qualified Lawyer within the Council’s well-respected Legal Services team, you will handle a technical legal caseload of complex, politically sensitive cases, ensuring the provision of timely, accurate, and high-quality advice. You will work closely with colleagues to deliver high standards of service in Civil litigation, Criminal Prosecutions, Commercial and Regulatory matters team. The role will include, but is not limited to, the following:
- Managing a range of Civil and Criminal Litigation cases under the supervision of the Principal Lawyer.
- Developing expertise in areas such as Housing, Judicial Review, Criminal Prosecutions, Commercial Law, Regulatory matters and more.
- Representing, commensurate with experience, the Council in the County and Magistrates Court, providing advocacy services and managing litigation.
What you'll need to succeed:
- Legal Degree or equivalent.
- Commitment to completing the SQE or QLTS.
- Experience in a relevant area of practice and understanding of UK Local Government.
- Experience in preparing reports and legal documents.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Experience of managing conflicting priorities.
- Strong team management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to continuous professional development and training.
