The UHN Director of Research is a strategic senior management position within the Corporate Medical Team at UHN. With UHN’s collaboration with UHL and a unified board there is now more scope than ever to advance and enhance our Research offer.
The post holder will take responsibility for the management of all of UHN group’s clinical research activity including governance, regulatory compliance, contracting, finance and business development and the operational delivery of the trust research strategy.The role will be central to the operational delivery of the group’s research agenda and ensures that all research services are developed and maintained to the highest standards and make a positive contribution to the Trust’s core aims and objectives as outlined in its strategic plan.
Main duties of the job
You will be a team leader, overseeing the work of others and have personal responsibility to develop the research strategy and operational research infrastructure of UHN in conjunction with the UHN/UHL Group Director of Research and Innovation.
You will be required to work closely with the UHN/UHL Group Director of Research and have significant autonomy for ensuring that an effective, safe and efficient research and development service is delivered to enable all patients to access research safely.The post holder will be responsible for ensuring that participation in research is promoted to all of our patient base and harness systems to promote patient and public involvement in research. You will represent the trust at external meetings with key stakeholders and will ensure that the Trust is well poised to respond quickly to new research and funding opportunities.
The postholder will be an experienced clinician with a track record of delivering programmes and trials at scale and pace. You will ensure that key relationships with research sponsors and clinical research partners are cultivated and maintained.The role will necessitate budgetary responsibility for research and development income to ensure the department meets financial targets and to ensure that the Trust meets corporate financial obligations. You will oversee delivery of contracts, including reporting requirements and to manage resource allocation systems, increases the Trust’s research capacity and income.

Essential criteria- Professional registration with GMC
- Advanced qualification in Research (Masters or equivalent) or experience of working at a similar level
- Evidence of ongoing CPD in Research
- PhD in Research
- Management qualification
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria- Significant Experience in a senior leadership role in Research
- Experience in leading cross organisation change programmes, aimed at improving organisational performance
- Proven record of establishing effective partnership working across complex networks with external and internal parties
- Detailed knowledge of the NHS Research delivery frameworks and experience of strategic working with key stakeholders
- Experience of effective budget management and delivering value for money
- Evidence of the use of quality improvement methodology

If you need to have a Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check, as a requirement of the role, you will be required to repay the cost of obtaining a DBS check (£49.50) and this amount will be reclaimed from your first salary. From 1st February 2019 all new starters to the Trust are required to join the DBS update service as per Trust DBS Re-checking Policy which has an annual cost of £16.New employees who do not join the update service will be required to pay £49.50 for a new DBS check in 3 years time.
Please note that news starters with KGH are subject to a six month probationary period.
