There is currently an exciting opportunity for a Band 6 Speech & Language Therapist (SALT) to join the Stroke service at Redcar Primary Care Hospital. The Stroke Service covers Hambleton & Richmond.

You will work within a AHP Consultant led multidisciplinary team offering specialist assessment, intervention and rehabilitation, providing advice where needed to other professionals regarding the management of stroke and Complex Rehabilitation specific conditions.

You will need to be able to work as part of a team and on your own, frequently using your own initiative. Excellent communication skills, organisational skills, enthusiasm, commitment and ability to negotiate across a wide range of agencies are also vital in this post.

The role will require being involved with clients with a range of multiple medical, social and emotional problems, as well as a substantial amount of home visits, discharge planning, rehabilitation and education. Driving or having access to transport is also an essential part of this post.

The team currently provides a 5 day service so there is an expectation for the successful candidate to be included in the cover for bank holiday working.

Successful candidate must have access to a vehicle for work purposes to meet the requirements of the role.

Main duties of the job

To provide a specialist clinical Speech & Language Therapy service within the stroke specialism as part of Hambleton and Richmond stroke and complex rehabilitation service, within the framework of clinical governance.

Experience of working with stroke specific conditions is essential. There will be the opportunity to develop more advanced clinical skills as well as contributing to wider OT initiatives and the chance to develop further staff supervision and appraisal skills.

This could be worked flexibly across a 5 day week as part of a rota and across the Friarage and community hospital stroke rehabilitation and early supported discharge settings.

To provide specialist communication and / or swallowing assessment and intervention for other patients.

This could be across a range of settings including acute and community hospitals and in outpatient clinics.

To work flexibly as part of the South Tees Stroke & Complex Rehabilitation Service and as part of the

growing the friarage and community group to meet the needs of the service.

Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria
  • Degree and licence to practice as a Speech & Language Therapist as approved by the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists
  • State registration as a qualified Speech & Language Therapist with the Health & Care professions Council.
  • Registered member of the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists.

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Completed post-graduate dysphagia training and competencies
  • Basic IT skills and competence (ability to use Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, e-mail and internet and healthcare digital systems)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post-graduate experience of working with adults with acquired communication and swallowing disorders including after stroke and with other medical disorders.
  • Experience of working within an NHS environment
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of carrying out videofluoroscopic evaluation of swallowing.
