Reporting to the Service Manager, and working closely with clinical colleagues, the Deputy Service Manager will deliver the integrated clinical, operational and financial performance for a specified Specialty.
This role is responsible for ensuring national and local access targets are achieved, along with ensuring aspects of people, performance and financial objectives are delivered as per Specialty business plans. The Deputy Service Manager will provide local leadership, ensuring delivery of objectives and driving forward the service to improve the operational effectiveness.
The post holder is expected to provide proactive and visible leadership. Leadership will span four key areas: service leadership, people and personal leadership, quality leadership and collaborative leadership.
This job description provides a generic description of the main responsibilities of the Deputy Service Manager role. The job description will be modified to reflect any Division and Group specific responsibilities as appropriate.
Main duties of the job
Provide leadership to the Specialty and contribute to developing strategic direction.
Be accountable for the operational management of the Specialty.
Support the Service Manager and Group Manager with the financial performance of the Group with oversight of the specialty.
Ensure specialty-level commitment to develop plans to move the Trust to 7/7 working.
Support the Service Manager in reporting to Group Board meetings on specialty performance.
Represent the specialty at local levels, developing partnerships, sharing best practice and integrating this knowledge within the Trust.
Set an example to other staff through own personal behaviours.

- Evidence of continuing professional development
Experience
Essential criteria- Previous and successful operational management experience gained within the health sector
- Experience of supporting:
- change within a complex organisation
- operational delivery
- management of operating budgets and delivering financial surplus
- management of teams and individuals
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Essential criteria- Highly developed operational leadership skills
- Highly effective presentation skills (written and verbal) with well‑structured reasoning
- Proficient ICT skills including analysis, interpretation & presentation of complex data
- Detailed knowledge of: Clinical Quality & Safety methodologies Clinical & Corporate Governance frameworks Relevant legislation and best practice Governance & risk management systems
