Executive Director Consumer Protection and Markets

Competition and Markets Authority

£129,966 - £149,999

Location: Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh, London or Manchester with regular travel.

Lead the nation’s consumer protection and markets regime at a time of significant change.

About us

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is the UK’s principal competition and consumer protection authority. An independent non-ministerial government department, we help people, businesses and the UK economy by promoting competitive markets and tackling unfair behaviour.
Our vital and varied remit includes investigating mergers; investigating potential breaches of UK competition law; enforcing consumer protection law; advising policymakers and Ministers on the design and implementation of relevant policies; advising people and businesses about their rights and obligations under competition and consumer law; and working with sector regulators to promote stronger competition in specific industries.

We also have significant new powers to enforce consumer protection law and promote competition in digital markets.

Your role

As Executive Director, you will have strategic and operational leadership of the CMA’s Consumer and Markets directorate. You will also be an active member of the CMA Board. You’ll ensure our consumer protection and markets regimes are delivered to a clear vision, in a collaborative and inclusive working culture.

Working closely with the Chief Executive Officer and your fellow Board members, you will set the strategic and policy direction for your directorate’s work.

As the senior responsible officer for consumer enforcement cases and markets projects, you will also be accountable for a strong pipeline of prospective cases and projects. Overseeing and taking responsibility for our portfolio of regulatory appeals, you’ll work across the organisation to build a resilient, agile model for resourcing and delivering appeals.

As an advocate for the CMA, you will foster excellent relationships across government, and within the legal, economic and business community. In leading the implementation of the consumer and markets elements of new Digital Markets, Competition and Consumer legislation, you will enjoy scope to shape a lasting legacy.

About you

You will bring to the role exceptional knowledge and experience in applying and enforcing consumer protection laws. It’s essential that you have a strong understanding of market study and market investigation processes within the UK’s statutory framework.
We expect you to demonstrate a measurable track record of taking strategic decisions, managing risks proactively and operating collegiately within complex governance arrangements. A highly credible individual, you have the ability to move between strategic thinking and technical detail.

Your communication and influencing skills will equip you to manage complex, high-level stakeholder relationships.

The benefits

Your benefits package will include a competitive contributory pension scheme and generous annual leave, plus opportunities for flexible and hybrid working. The package also includes childcare benefits, and season ticket and bicycle loans. The Civil Service is committed to becoming the most inclusive employer in the UK and we want to maximise the potential of everyone who chooses to work for us.

In return for your dedication, you will enjoy our commitment to your career and development.
