Alternatively, those who have achieved recognition via the CESR or Portfolio route should also apply. The candidate should hold a FRCS (Tr and Orth) or an appropriate overseas specialist qualification. Subspecialist Interest The Department would like to appoint a surgeon who has a broad ability in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery but with a special interest and expertise in Primary and Revision hip arthroplasty, and ideally periprosthetic fracture management.
Recognised fellowship in this field is desired. Mentoring The new appointee will be supported and mentored for at least the first six months of the post This will be provided by one of the consultants in the orthopaedic department, depending on the appointee's choice.
On-Call/Emergency Duties The on-call is Consultant-led and each firm at present is on-call for half a week at a time on a one-in ten rota. The handover occurs 08.00 hrs on Mondays and 17:00 hrs on Thursdays. During the on-call week, routine commitments including private practice are cancelled, apart from follow-up Orthopaedic and Fracture Clinics which are run by members of the team without consultant presence..
The Consultant is expected to be available to lead trauma care during the period of time they are on-call. Leave is not taken over an on- call period but can wbe swapped. There is a 7 day a week all day trauma list, and also 24hour access to the emergency theatre, which is permanently staffed.
Only essential operations are performed after hours. This enables close Consultant supervision and training of the junior staff. The department is committed to providing a prompt and high standard of trauma care as shown by our excellent outcomes on the NHFD.

Four of our consultants are faculty members of AO UK including the current president. Specialist Service Development It is envisioned that the provision of orthopaedic services in the future will become more speciality based. With that in mind we already run the main orthopaedic clinic as a multi disciplinary clinic attended by the consultant, a specialist nurse practitioner and a trainee
