Job overview

The post holder will work closely with the Maternity Governance Midwife to develop and facilitate implementation of the Maternity Risk Management Strategy and provide specialist risk management advice to staff within the maternity directorate.

They will be responsible for monitoring and investigating local incidents. They will be proactive in their approach to risk prevention and will help to encourage an open and transparent reporting culture that enables the organisation to learn lessons and prevent incidents from reoccurring.

It is expected the post holder will also work clinically on a regular basis to maintain clinical credibility.

To deputise for the Maternity Governance Midwife in their absence or as appropriate.

The role is on a Permanent basis for 7.5 hours per week, ideally to be worked on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday.

  • NMC registered midwife including recent clinical experience
  • Mentorship qualification
  • Evidence of post registration professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Specialist knowledge of quality and patient safety issues acquired through training/experience.

Knowledge & Nature of Experience

Essential criteria
  • Working in a variety of settings utilising all midwifery skills

  • Recent experience as a Band 6 midwife
  • Knowledge of NMC Midwives Rules & Standards
  • Knowledge of key issues in the NHS relating to patient safety
Desirable criteria
  • Use of Datix Risk Management System
  • Experience of investigating incidents
  • Statistical analysis and presentation of complex information
  • Clinical audit
  • In depth knowledge and understanding of the principles and practice of risk management, investigation and mitigation in the context of clinical governance in the NHS
  • Knowledge of risk management and statutory obligations
  • Understanding of, and commitment to, using comparative information to support clinical quality improvement and patient safety
Our current Mental Health Services division may be transferring the provision of its services to Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust (BSMHFT). Whilst at present you are applying for a position within Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation should you be successful in gaining a position within Mental Health Services, your employment may in the future be transferred over to BSMHFT.
