We are looking for a Senior Staff Nurse to join our Haematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant and Immunology services (Butterfly Ward). You will be gaining expertise in the most advance and novel cancer treatments while providing care and support for children, young people, and their families through their treatment journey.

Main duties of the job
  • To provide clinical leadership to a designated nursing team and ensure the provision of high-quality nursing care to children, young people and their families.
  • To ensure the provision of excellent, evidence-based nursing care for the children, young people and their families at all times.
  • To act as a role model and expert clinical practitioner.
  • To assist in the safe, effective an efficient management of the department within the allocated resources.
  • To promote a progressive attitude to the continual improvement of patient care through research and evidence-based practice.
  • To undertake delegated responsibility for the department in the absence of the Ward Manager/Team Leader.
  • To be familiar with and adopt the principles of the NHS Chief Nursing Officers vision for Compassion in Practice (NHS Commissioning Board Dec 2012)

Person specification

Academic/Professional qualification/Training

Essential criteria
  • NMC registered nurse (child branch) or able to join the NMC child branch register for candidates educated outside of the UK
  • Relevant nursing qualification
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development linked to demonstrable competencies
  • Practice Assessor & Preceptorship course or equivalent

Experience/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience of having worked with acute/chronically sick children and young people or transferable specialist skills
  • Demonstrable experience in teaching and supervising other staff members
  • Knowledge and experience of handling clinical incidents, complaints and reporting

Skills/Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to plan and prioritise care for patients
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to confidently use and navigate IT systems to provide care and complete duties
Desirable criteria
  • Administration of intravenous (IV) drugs
  • Central venous access management
