Tell me about the apprenticeship

We have apprenticeships in End User Computer Engineering based in either our Blackpool or Birmingham digital hub. You'll be able to indicate your preference when you apply.

This is a Level 4 digital apprenticeship. We're looking to hire people to be future leaders and experts in Engineering.

As an Apprentice Engineer you'll be hands-on providing a high-quality, face-to-face IT support service to our users, helping DWP colleagues with installation, configuration and issue resolution on DWP devices and software.

So, you'll learn on the job alongside our brilliant, expert team. But you'll also be studying towards gaining a Level 4 engineering apprenticeship qualification.

You'll be given about 20% of your work time to focus on your qualification.

You will be supported by your line manager, skills coach and the engineering community, as well as fellow apprentices on the programme.

You don't need any prior experience or IT qualifications. But there is a lot to do and learn, so you need to be ready to work hard and participate in the many opportunities you will be given.

How do I apply?

You will work through a largely self-selecting application process run by Makers Academy.

This process is designed to enable you to try coding and to help you understand if you are suitable for the apprenticeship.

  • Completing your application on the Civil Service Jobs website before Wednesday 11th September 2024.
  • As part of the application, you will be asked to provide:
  • A Personal Details application form
  • A verbal Test.
  • A summary of your employment history detailing your responsibilities, skills, accomplishments, plus your qualifications and relevant training.
  • A Technical and behaviour statements (up to 250 words for each statement).
  • Interviews with DWP Digital will then be confirmed should you be successful.

The apprenticeship is due to commence in March 2025.

Entry Requirements:

  • You hold a current United Kingdom (UK) or EAA Passport, and NI number
  • You've lived in the UK and/or EEA for the past 3 years
  • You're eligible to work in the UK and are not in full-time education (at the time the apprenticeship starts)
  • Either hold GCSEs in Maths and English at Grade C/4 or above. Or you can complete and pass a functional skills tests if you don't have these GCSEs.
  • You must not hold an existing qualification at the same or higher level in a similar subject.
