Senior Planning Enforcement Officer

Directorate: Resources
Department: Planning and Regeneration
Salary: Grade G - £37,938 to £41,511 per annum
Hours: 37 hours per week
Contract Type: Permanent

Location: Town Hall, Derby Road, Long Eaton, Derbyshire, NG10 1HU

The Opportunity

We are looking for a suitably experienced officer to take a leading role in the delivery of the Council’s Planning Enforcement service. You will deal with a wide caseload of planning enforcement cases, provide professional advice and support to the Planning Enforcement Assistant and our customers, and will act as case officer for the processing of planning (and related) applications and appeals instigated through enforcement investigations.
You will be required to collate and assess evidence from a variety of sources, including from your own site inspections and take appropriate action based on your findings. Where negotiation is unable to secure a satisfactory outcome, you will need to prepare reports recommending formal enforcement action.

You may then be required to give evidence at appeals or in court.

About Us

Centrally located between Nottingham and Derby with good transport links, Erewash is a diverse borough encompassing the towns of Long Eaton and Ilkeston surrounded by the rural Green Belt.

About You

You will have an aptitude for problem solving. The post requires excellent organisation and negotiation skills, and you will need to demonstrate tact and diplomacy in dealing with customers and an aptitude for maintaining and reviewing detailed records.
You will need to be assertive at times, have sound communication skills and the ability to explain clearly the details of planning legislation to a varied customer base. You will frequently need to work on your own initiative both in the office and on sites throughout the Borough.

An ability to interpret, understand and explain plans and technical drawings is essential.

You will be a team player, show initiative and have an appreciation of good customer service. You will have experience of dealing with planning applications and appeals, ideally with some experience of planning enforcement work.

You must be a member, or eligible for membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute and hold a degree in Town Planning or equivalent.

Benefits of Working for Us

In addition to a competitive salary, you will have access to:
  • Generous annual leave entitlement – 29 days annual leave (rising to
33 days after 5 years’ continuous service) plus 8 bank holidays a year.
  • Free workplace car parking within the Borough.
  • Opportunities for training, learning and continuous professional development.
  • Hybrid working, family friendly and flexible working policies available.
  • Option to join the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) plus access to a salary sacrifice scheme for added voluntary pension contributions.
  • Subsidised leisure membership with the Fit for Work scheme.
  • Access to an employee benefits scheme.
