Human Factors Specialist

We are
seeking a Human Factors Specialist to support the integration of human factors
into SGN’s operational, engineering, and safety-critical processes. You will
work closely with multidisciplinary teams to improve system design, reduce
human error, and enhance safety and performance across our gas network.
We
deliver safety, warmth, and comfort to homes and businesses. Every role, whether in the office or on the front line, plays a key part in this mission.
Here’s how you will contribute…
  • Apply
human factors principles to the design and evaluation of procedures, equipment, workspaces, and systems.
  • Supporting
major hazard risk assessments, safety case development, and regulatory
compliance with the HSE.
  • Conduct
human reliability assessments and task analyses to identify and mitigate
potential human errors.
  • Collaborate
with engineering, asset management, training, and H&S teams to embed
human factors into project lifecycles.
  • Review
and develop operational documentation, control room layouts, and emergency
response procedures.
  • Delivering
training, workshops, and awareness sessions on human factors topics across
the business.
  • Interfacing
with internal stakeholders and external regulators, including HSE and
industry partners.
  • Keeping
up to date with best practices, regulatory developments, and industry

standards (e.g., HSG48, ISO 9241).

What you
will need
  • You
have a Degree (or equivalent experience) in Human Factors, Ergonomics, Psychology, or related field.
  • Proven
experience applying human factors in high-hazard industries (e.g., energy, utilities, aviation, nuclear, oil & gas).
  • An
informed understanding of regulatory requirements and safety-critical
systems.
  • Skilled
in human reliability analysis, task analysis, user-centred design, and
control room ergonomics.
  • You
are a confident communicator, who is analytical with problem-solving
skills.
  • Ability
to influence and collaborate with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Membership
of a relevant professional body (e.g., Chartered status with CIEHF or

working towards it) is desirable.
