How you'll make a difference:

Leading a team who are responsible for managing one of the largest contracts in the council, you will ensure the recycling and waste collection service operates efficiently and effectively. As Collections Monitoring Lead, you will continually drive quality standards, enabling the council to retain its position of one of the best performing in the country for waste management.

You will be instrumental to influencing and driving improvements in residents’ behaviour, relating to how they engage and use the services, resulting in happier residents and an improved street care environment.

What you will be doing:

  • Daily, you will manage a team of waste and street cleansing officers who support you to ensure the statutory duties and council policies in relation to street cleanliness are effectively and professionally discharged and support activity to promote recycling and reduce waste.
  • Working closely with the council’s waste collection contractor, you will ensure service delivery is in line with contracts, monitor operational performance, use initiative to resolve service issues and co-ordinate infringement reports for non-compliance.
  • Co-ordinating the collection of payments, data and the production of management information reports, you will support the running of the service and facilitate effective decision making.
  • It will be your responsibility to oversee the delivery of the initial stages of enforcement, whilst working closely with the Envirocrime and Street Cleansing teams, keeping records of the health and safety performance and investigating accidents and incidents.
  • Leading action campaigns in problematic housing areas, you will oversee domestic waste management and localised street cleansing issues, with a particular focus on the transient population.

What we need from you:

  • We require you to have a relevant degree in waste management or environmental management or a postgraduate qualification or equivalent relevant experience in waste management.
  • You must have experience of leading, managing and motivating a team in waste operations and be able to offer advice on the correct course of actions.
  • It is essential that you have a detailed knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, regulations and codes of practice and how to interpret and communicate this for a variety of audiences.
  • You will have proven experience in report writing, maintaining accurate records and reports and the ability to effectively present information to a wide range of audiences, whilst giving them a clear understanding of the subject matter.
  • Given the nature of this role, you must have the ability to influence and negotiate, build positive relationships and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

What you need to know:

  • You will be expected to travel throughout the authority and surrounding area so you must have a full, valid driving licence with regular access to a vehicle.
