About the role

The Faculty of Science & Engineering and Faculty of Health seek to recruit an enthusiastic and proactive Technician to support the Biological Services Unit (BSU) at our North Campus. The units support the teaching and research activity for the Peninsula Medical School.

The Role:

You will work closely with technical and academic staff and students, and you will be part of a team that provides key support for the research activities undertaken within the BSU. Your principal duties will be husbandry and animal care. You will be expected to complete all duties to the high standards required by the Health & Safety Executive and the Home Office.

You will manage and maintain complex animal breeding colonies, and undertake data recording and tasks in databases. Support the Facility manager to ensure the smooth operational running of the facility. Undertake Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer (NACWO) training where applicable

The Person:

  • Good working knowledge of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act and the roles and responsibilities of licenses working under the Act.
  • Good knowledge of procedures regarding safety, security, and personnel matters
  • Security clearance for working in animal facilities.
  • Relevant animal working experience
  • Team player
  • Ability to prioritize and complete work to deadlines.
  • Ability to engage with students and colleagues courteously and constructively.
  • Demonstrable experience with systems, equipment, processes, and procedures relevant to the work area
  • Demonstrable relevant practical skills
  • The ability to repeatedly work to set procedures with a high degree of attention to details
  • Proven ability to multitask and to work as part of a team
  • Highly organized and self-motivated
  • High ethical standards
  • Strong oral and written communication skills

This is a full-time position working 37 hours per week on a permanent basis.
