Job overview

UHCW are looking to recruit a Therapy Assistant Practitioner to work within our award nominated therapy team at the Hospital of St Cross in Rugby. This role has been designed to take a lead on the equipment provision and management for our patients, supporting timely and cost effective discharge planning.

The role will include autonomous clinical working, including assessing and treating patients on the Day Surgery Unit.

Our team are considered a specialist orthopaedic service because our caseload includes those who have undergone complex orthopaedic procedures you are unlikely to find in many other hospitals around the UK.

Our service encompasses patients from the young adult hip preservation service and the complex acute knee service, both of which take patients from all over the UK. This is mainly due to these services being led by some of the UK’s most well renowned surgeons.

Another part of our caseload is the Rugby Day Surgery Unit, however, we are not solely an elective service; we also manage and rehabilitate many orthopaedic trauma patients and are part of the UHCW major trauma pathway. Within this pathway we take on trauma patients who have further rehabilitative or complex discharge needs.

Main duties of the job

Under the supervision of a Registered Therapist, the post holder will be expected to deliver a high-quality service by planning and prioritise own workload, and contributing to the effective and efficient running of the therapy service. The post holder will work independently within their scope of practice, demonstrating effective time management skills.

The post holder will provide clinical support for less experience staff as delegated by the Clinical Specialist / Clinical Team Leader.

To assess, treat and discharge patients within scope of practice, including mobility, equipment and functional assessments, progression of treatments, and leading on planned group work.

To independently develop and provide exercise programmes for individual patients, with the guidance of a registered therapist where appropriate.

To use knowledge and understanding of physical, mental, and behavioural health conditions to recognise deterioration in patients. Respond by promptly escalating concerns to a registered practitioner.
