The post holder will be a motivated registered nurse with excellent interpersonal & communication skills who has an enthusiasm to work effectively within a multidisciplinary innovative sexual & reproductive health service.
This is a development post for a registered adult nurse. The post holder will follow an individual training programme to develop their nursing knowledge from Band 5 staff nurse to Band 6 senior staff nurse through practical, real time, on the job experience training.
The post holder will be working to deliver a high standard of integrated sexual health care to patients, including delivering nurse led clinics. During the duration of the training programme, the post holder will build knowledge & experience on the types and complexities of patient groups, working towards the Integrated Sexual Health Band 6 Senior Staff Nurse Job Description.

Working within a supportive clinically led multi-disciplinary team, the post holder will follow an individualised training programme to develop their nursing knowledge from Band 5 staff nurse to Band 6 senior staff nurse through practical, real time, on the job experience training.For nurses with no sexual heath experience the maximum time scale is expected to be 2 years.
The training programme is delivered through a combination of courses, on-line & in-house training by senior sexual health professionals. Through supervision & assessment, the post-holder will be supported to practice safely & build their confidence in becoming an autonomous senior sexual health nurse.
The post is full time WTE 1.0 (37.5hrs) but consideration will be given to suitable candidates who wish to work part time with a minimum of WTE 0.5 (18.75hrs). Hours and days are are subject to the needs of the service. Early shifts start at 07.30/08.00 and late shifts finish at 20.00. At present Saturdays are not worked but this may change.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To maintain a high standard of nursing care and service provision, testing, treatment and management of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and screening for HIV and other blood borne infections (BBVs). (Relevance dependent on site of work).
To inform, advise, teach and counsel clients on all methods of contraceptionincluding performing Implanon insertion and removal.
To obtain clear and thorough relevant histories from patients.
To examine patients and obtain appropriate clinical specimens according to clinic protocol.
To manage a range of symptomatic and asymptomatic female and male cases including discharge, genital ulceration and genital warts. (Relevance dependent on site of work).
To manage patients attending for Pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV (PrEP), Post exposure Prophylaxis for HIV Sexual Exposure (PEPSE) or Post-exposure for HIV (PEP) according to local guidelines.
To initiate Cryotherapy according to Cryotherapy protocol.
To recognise signs and symptoms of complex and unstable health problemsrequiring medical review and refer on to appropriate health professionals.
To treat patients within the confines of patient group directions (PGDs) and arrange prescriptions of treatments not covered by PGD and safely administer and supply these.
To perform microscopy according to protocol. (Relevance dependent on site of work).
To carry out partner notification processes.
To promote sexual health and wellbeing through advice and information giving.
To maintain clinical case notes including electronic patients records to a high standard.
To observe and adhere to clinic protocols and working guidelines.
To liaise with nursing colleagues, other members of the multidisciplinary team and external agencies.
To assist in provision of nurse led sexual and reproductive health consultation in an outreach setting.
To assist the HCSW (Health Care Support Worker) to set up clinics, maintain equipment and order supplies if required.
To take part in initiatives to engage users in the development of the services depending on site of work
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria- RGN (NMC Sub-part 1 Adult branch)
- Certificate in mentorship course
- University certificate or equivalent in Sexual Health training
- DFRSH or equivalent University Certificate in Contraception / Reproductive Health
Experience
Essential criteria- Substantive post registration experience
- Previous experience in management or team leader role
- Experience in Sexual Health
- Experience in Contraception
Skills
Essential criteria- Excellent communication skills (written & verbal)
- Must have an active interest in this specialty and client group and be motivated to learn about sexual health and contraception
- IT skills
- Venepuncture
Abilities
Essential criteria- Willingness to undertake all aspects of the development training programme to progress to Band 6
- Must have the motivation and ability to work with both male and female client groups.
- The ability to discuss matters of sex and sexuality.
